Konuger of Ånf

The Konuger of Ånf was founded in 1970 after the various Jarls of the island were unified by the Jarldom of Remetlike. Before unification, the island was divided into various Jarldoms and Hersotain, each of which had belonges to the loosely organized Congress of Ånf, a tradition begun in the waning years of the Frostreach Empire's reign over the island. Since unification, Ånf has emerged as the strongest Voðeren contender to control the Þaru Isles, defeating the rival Jarldom of Svjolheim and emerging victorious in the Þaru Wars.

History

The island of Ånf occupies an excellent strategic position in the northern seas, acting as a gate between the inner sea which sits between the Þaru Isles, Grenholl, and mainland Telgren. This is why the Frostreach Empire originally began settling the island. However, the Frostreach presence was only nominal in central Ånf, and after the Empire crumbled and the then-Jarldom of Ånf declared itself independent, it was only really viable to travel via the seas. However, over the next several centuries, Ånf's Voðeren population would begin taming the interior even as the Jarldom itself fractured into multiple claimants and many independent states. This accounts for the island's low native population in the modern age, especially because Ånf is the most fertile of the Þaru Isles and allowed the agriculturally proficient Voðeren to outpace the native, then-tribal Mauronians.

Ånf would later become the single largest source of Voðeren raiders in all the isles. With the island's large population but difficult to traverse interior, sailing the seas and taking others' goods instead of remaining on middling farms would prove very attractive to the population. For hundreds of years, the Ånfi would dominate the coast of Giriþiuda, terrorizing the population like no other. Their diaspora would settle places like the Aors Islands, establishing yet more minor states and contributing to endless fracturing of political power.

The stage to unification would only be set in 1806, when the Jarldom of Svjolheim attempted to take land on the island. This prompted a coalition of Jarls who worked together to contain the threat and push the interlopers off their island in a long war between 1808 and 1815. The Ånfi laid claim to the Aors islands as a core part of the "Greater Ånf", alongside the isles of Giriþiuda's coastline, however they were unable to resurrect a state ruled by one of their elites after the Svjolheim conquest of them. The invasion and coalition had upset the balance of power on Ånf, allowing for the more powerful Jarldoms to begin consuming their smaller neighbors. One such candidate was the Jarldom of Remetlike, a nation in southern Ånf with a solid population base and an excellent raiding spot for the coast of Giriþiuda. By leveraging raider contacts, the nation began expanding slowly, then rapidly after the turn of the 20th century SC. Remetlike took advantage of the Þaru Wars to eliminate their competitors on the island of Ånf, and had soon unified the island.

Crowning their Jarl as Konuger of Ånf, the nation then took the fight to Svjolheim, pursuing the claim against them over the Aors Islands. Svjolheim's preoccupance in war with the Konuger of Sørensland would lead to the Aors islands falling, and soon their two foes had formed an alliance. This culminated in a joint force of Ånfi-Sørens troops landing on the shores of Úlfsang (Svjolheim's core island) and defeating Svjolheim's forces in battle. This surprise attack succeeded in slaying the Jarl and his son, leaving the Ånfi free to occupy the eastern half of the island.
