The Sapphire of Vrandakan

The Sapphire of Vrandakan, sometimes called by its older name of Findil's Charm, is an ancient gemstone of inestimable worth which possesses the arcane property of being able to calm the Deep Sleepers. The story of its supposed origin is told in the myth of Findil and the Sapphire of Vrandakan.   The royal family of Vrandakan keeps the Sapphire in a chamber filled with sea-mist and conch-shell wind chimes. When tides are wrong or storms approach, the gem begins to hum softly, like a lullaby from the deep. Sailors swear it grants calm seas to those who offer a strand of hair and a whisper of longing.

History

For many centuries after its supposed discovery, Findil's Charm was housed in a remote site known as the Temple of the Sea Song on the south of Klokken Isle.   In 3549 BPC, not very long after Vrandakan was granted a city charter during the age of the Old Pale Empire, the rulers of the city decided to remove it from a location they deemed no longer appropriate and falling into ruin, and house it instead within the palace. It was at this time that the gemstone acquired its common name as the Sapphire of Vrandakan.   The islanders claimed that Findil's Charm kept them safe from the Deep Sleepers and whilst this was long thought to be mere superstition, it does seem to be true that in the aftermath of the Planar Conformation when ocean travel was impossible elsewhere, the Klokken islanders were at the centre of a small circle of calm, free from their frenzied attacks and were able to access the mainland of Myruthea when the rest of the world was unable to sail any distance away from the coast at all.   Identified as one of the Fate Stones by Prince Rygarde the gemstone was stolen during the Limit Protectorate and risked destruction before the Loyalist Thaumatic Army Council saved the Fate Stones. It was not restored to Vrandakan, however, until the rise of the Jewelled Queendoms.
