Mallan Wolfram

Mallan Wolfram

"I would not claim to know any more about the nature of life than the next fellow, but... It's the small things that keep me going each day. The pink and purple sunrises, the rustle of the trees in spring, and the peace of a fresh snowfall." - Mallan Wolfram
Mallan Wolfram was a human noble who served as Lord of the village Brooder's Crossing and its surrounding lands, the province of Frewerner.

Early Life

Born in 8023 in Brooder's Crossing, Wolfram was the firstborn son of the Lord and Lady of Frewerer, who resided in Brooder's Crossing. He was educated and went off to fight in the final years of the Twenty-Year War. During this time, he witnessed atrocities that made him sympathetic to the Makovai, though he still believed that his side in the war was in the right. He also met a druidess named Blue Eagle, with whom he would develop a relationship.

Lord of Frewerner and Exile

"I know you’re not inclined to trust me. But I am an innocent man" - Wolfram
After the war, Wolfram returned and eventually became the Lord of Frewerner, residing in Greywatch Keep. He focused on reviving the town's economy and trying to rid the surrounding lands of brigands, though he ultimately failed to do this.   For a period of fifteen years, Wolfram was exiled after he was falsely accused of murder by one of his former knights, Gaius Bernard, who thought him unfit to rule based on his reckless anti-brigand tactics. During this time he hid out in the abandoned Monastery of Zor with Blue Eagle, with whom he had reunited.

Return to Brooder's Crossing

"As much as I wish this affair didn’t require the help of hardened adventurers, I’m afraid I must request your services." - Wolfram, speaking of the matter of recovering Alda of Rovna.
In 8077, Wolfram, hoping to gain the attention of outside individuals not connected with Bernard, kidnapped Bernard's daughter, Bianca. As he had hoped, Bernard sent private adventurers to take care of the matter. Wolfram explained to the adventurers that he meant no harm, and showed them Bianca, safe and healthy. He explained to them how he had been framed, and asked the adventurers to do something about it. With Blue Eagle's assistance, the adventurers returned to Brooder's Crossing and confronted Bernard. The knight-turned lord at first denied the accusations, but later admitted them upon his defeat. Wolfram and the adventurers exiled Bernard.   Despite their knowledge of Wolfram as an innocent man, much of Brooder's Crossing remained unsure about Wolfram, especially due to his partnership with Blue Eagle. Making matters worse was an accident in Greywatch Keep in 8078 that left him without the use of his legs. To appease the townspeople, Wolfram and Blue Eagle agreed to separate, with Blue Eagle returning to her homeland, the tribe of the Gerendars.   By 8082, Wolfram had taken an interest in Alda of Rovna, a noblewoman from a nearby province. The two agreed to marry that year. Wolfram hired a group of adventurers to go recover Alda and her brother, Aristeo of Rovna, when they became delayed on their travels by a group of Bandits and a green dragon. The venture was successful, but the same group of adventurers were forced to step in when it was revealed that Alda and her family were planning to assassinate Wolfram, just barely stopping them at Wolfram's own wedding. Though grateful to be alive, Wolfram fell into a deep depression afterwards.

Mission to Boulder Glade

"I’m not that person anymore. Aristeo also isn’t the man he used to be. He and I have had several conversations over the past few years, and, well, he is a man of great wisdom, humbled by what his family did. I realize the potential he has, and that I no longer have the same potential. Even if I did… well, I don’t want to die beneath the cold, stone walls of Greywatch Keep. Blue Eagle and I will live out our lives together in the forest, far from here… thanks to you. You have my eternal gratitude." - Wolfram, to the adventurers who helped him rescue Blue Eagle.
Though Wolfram formed a friendship with Aristeo of Rovna, the last member of his house, his loneliness and despair worsened. This depression affected his ability to govern Brooder's Crossing, and he largely allowed Kunesh Hosek, his head scout, to run affairs of the village, with occasional assistance from Aristeo.   When the Ren Berig Marunite Tribe attacked the Gerendars, another Ren Berig tribe, Wolfram deeply desired to venture to Boulder Glade, the site of the attack. His old love and best friend, Blue Eagle, was a member of the tribe, and he wanted to know whether she was alive or not. He recruited a group of adventurers passing through the town, as well as a ranger of the area, Rowan Murphy, to journey to Boulder Glade.   During the journey, Wolfram confided to Murphy that, rather than a relief mission as he had told them, that they were actually going to find Blue Eagle. When they arrived at Boulder Glade, they found the druidess in the process of being sacrificed by Marunite druids. He and the adventurers defeated the druids, and saved Blue Eagle, who embraced him.   After a brief conversation, Wolfram was certain that he no longer wanted to rule Brooder's Crossing. He gave the adventurers a decree that declared Aristeo the new ruler of Brooder's Crossing, and lived out the rest of his life with Blue Eagle, finding peace in the woods of the Western Commons.
