Parera

"The western lands of Elmara are referred to as Parera: The Lands Beyond the Para's. The people of this region refer to themselves by many names, from Darabans and Hurans to Felisian and Terrians. Many kingdoms once ruled here, and it's people were as diverse as the land itself.   In 1155 AP Parera and Rommio-Varlia became the unified kingdom of Elmara. Before that, Parera was divided amongst many kingdoms. The most notable of these were Daraba, Donhura, Felisia and Termia. These kingdoms left their mark and the regions of Parera are still named after the kingdoms that once ruled there.   One thing that sets Parera apart from most kingdoms in Wordal, is the fact that it was never ruled by the Burbric Empire. When the Empire fell, not much changed for the people in Parera except the colour of their neighbors' uniforms.   Over the following centuries the kingdoms of Parera have were locked in a struggle for power and influence amongst each other, both through intrigue, diplomacy, marriage and war. Ultimately it was Termia that was able to excert its dominance of the region, and it became the first of the kingdoms to refer to itself as Parera. Eventually it was able to lay claims to all the lands of Parera, though its rivals never truly accepted its rule. Eventually, through strategic marriages and suspicious accidents the kingdom of Perara became part of the Unified Kingdom of Elmara. Now, many years later, its people still identify strongly with their local traditions and values. Though Parera is now part of a unified Elmara, its people still consider themselves Pareran first and Elmaran second.   The lands of Parera are as diverse as its people. Along the coastline are idyllic villages. Merchants from the southern jungles come here to sell spices and exitic goods, before continuing their journey to the capital in the east. Further inland you'll find a wide variety of environments. In the north you'll find deep forests in mountain valleys and as you travel further south the terrain changes into rocky cliffs and canyons, arid hills and grassy plains.   The people of Parera are passionate, proud and outspoken. Though Parera is now part of Elmara, it has never fully accepted the rule of the eastern kings. Many in Rommio-Varlia see Parera as too unruly, too resistant to authority, while Parerans see their eastern cousins as overly proud and too eager to impose their ways upon them. The current king of Elmara, Alfonte Estente, has made efforts to secure the loyalty of the region, granting titles and privileges to those who support him."
