Transportation on the Ice Plain of Nyrian
Introduction
Across the endless expanse of Nyrian’s Ice Plain, the Frostfolk travel in various ways over the frozen terrain. Their methods are shaped by pragmatism, survival, and a deep bond with the Winter Wolves—the only animals that accompanied them during the Exodus and survived. On Foot
The simplest yet most energy-consuming method is traveling on foot. Especially in fractured terrain or for short explorations, individuals resort to spiked soles or snowshoes to improve grip and stability on uneven surfaces. For longer distances, skis are favored—averaging two meters in length and designed with a narrow profile for efficient gliding. Luggage is hauled on flat sleds about 1.5 meters long, pulled via hip harnesses or hand grips.Winter Wolves and Sleds
More efficient and widely used is sled travel powered by Winter Wolves—majestic creatures with broad paws, thick fur, and an exceptional sense of direction and stamina. The single-person sled, around 1.8 meters long and 0.8 meters wide, is lightweight and drawn by one or two wolves. It’s used by swift messengers, scouts, or hunters who need agility and speed through the landscape. For medium distances or small cargo, the two-person sled proves ideal. Holding one or two people plus gear, it measures approximately 2.2 meters long. Pulled by two to four Winter Wolves, it strikes a balance between speed and load capacity and is preferred for trade. The largest type is the so-called sled carriage—up to four meters long and two meters wide, with space for up to six passengers or heavy goods. A team of at least eight strong Winter Wolves pulls this sturdy vehicle, which remains reliable even in blizzards. It’s used for transporting people or shipments in more organized operations. The Ice Glider
A standout method is the Ice Glider—a wind-powered craft with flexible runners and sail rigging. Steering one requires skill. Measuring nearly three meters in length and built to accommodate one to three people, it excels at swift messaging, exploration, or reconnaissance. Its greatest strength lies in leaping over small fissures through clever sail handling—covering jumps of up to three meters. However, it’s wind-dependent: in calm conditions, Frostfolk pull it like a sled. When heavily loaded, it feels sluggish, and during storms it’s entirely unsuitable—too light, too vulnerable.
