The Tundra Island Region

The First Awakening of Nature

The farther one moves away from the icy north, the more vibrant the world becomes. The islands here are larger, with more surface above sea level, and the environment slowly begins to change. The eternal gray of ice and rock gives way to darker, earthy tones, as the first signs of vegetation appear.   There are no dense forests or blooming meadows—but it is more than just stone and frost. Here begins the first true growth on Thaldris, in a zone that marks the transition from the cold of the north to the temperate world of the south.  

Geological Structure

The islands are still composed of dark, compact rock, but with more layers of soil and frost deposits. Some islands rise higher above the water, with gentle slopes or rugged rock ridges. Many coastlines are characterized by fjord landscapes—narrow waterways stretching between the cliffs. In colder months, a thin ice layer forms on the fjords, though it never remains permanently.  

Flora & Fauna

Here, the first low shrubs and bushes appear, adapted to the harsh conditions. Small, resilient land animals emerge—not large mammals, but hardy creatures feeding on lichen and moss. The sea remains dominant—large deep-sea fish and early coastal dwellers begin to take advantage of the warmer shorelines. The seabirds that appeared only as occasional visitors on the Arctic islands now have permanent nesting sites here.  

Climate & Weather

Temperatures range between -5°C and +10°C, with seasonal fluctuations. The wind remains strong, but in some areas, deep valleys or forests help break its force. Rain begins to occur regularly—not in heavy showers, but as a fine, persistent mist. Snow continues to appear, but only in the highest elevations or during specific seasons.  

Transition to the Next Zone

The tundra island region forms a natural bridge to the temperate zone. The foundation for forests already exists here, but they are sparse and compact—not yet the full, dense tree landscapes found farther south on Thaldris.
