The Spirituality of the Frost People

Gehe zur deutschen Version: Die Spiritualität der Frostmenschen

Faith in Transition

Before the Exodus, the Frost People believed in gods – every child learns this from an early age. These gods had long favored the Frostfolk, until one day a god appeared whose sole purpose was to destroy or enslave them: Tovramur. He sent his armies against the people without mercy.   The elders saw that resistance was futile and that humanity stood on the brink of extinction. A final contingent of mages and warriors was sent against the enemy, while the rest of the people fled aboard ships. None of the gods helped them. None stood against Tovramur. Only the elders sacrificed themselves.   The people escaped – and the survivors swore never to worship gods again. Instead, they began to honor their ancestors, who had made their escape possible. During the decades-long journey across the sea, they learned that nature spirits had to be appeased in order for the voyage to succeed.   By the time they reached Nyrian, their new homeland, the veneration and appeasement of nature spirits had become firmly established. Over time, a dual belief system emerged, which continues to shape the spiritual life of the Frost People to this day.   Ancestors are invoked for courage, blessings of children, good fortune, and other mental or familial matters. Nature spirits, on the other hand, are called upon for favorable weather, safe travel, health, and physical strength – including aspects such as speed or endurance.   Certain natural phenomena have gained symbolic significance in the cultural consciousness. They are not directly worshipped but carry spiritual weight. For example, Skarlun, the small sun upon its return, represents hope. Varda, the great moon, is associated with the preservation of tradition.   There are overlaps between the two domains, and the boundaries are not rigid. Still, it can be said that ancestors are primarily linked to inner strength and familial values, while nature spirits are more connected to external forces, physical prowess, and survival in the harsh world.   In essence: Ancestors represent the inner world – spirit, family, history. Nature spirits represent the outer world – body, journey, survival.
