Report of the Mage Elynn Sturmhand – The Search for Life in the Construct

Gehe zur deutschen Version: Bericht der Magierin Elynn Sturmhand – Die Suche nach Leben im Konstrukt
There is a silence that always accompanies me—not the cold, lifeless stillness of snow, but a deeper, ceaseless absence. It lies in their movements, in the way they obey without understanding. The three Golems, once created as mere tools, are my constant companions. I have grown with them, corrected their flaws, refined their movements, adjusted their runes. But they have not grown with me.   I remember yesterday, the moment that made me pause. It was one of those rare instances in which I had to admit to myself that I expect more than they can give me.   I stood before Varun, the first Golem, and gave him a task. "Loosen the soil carefully. Free the roots from the earth so we can transplant them."   He paused briefly, then his metallic hand moved, his fingers stretched out—precise, exact, yet without understanding. "Command unclear. Loosening soil: possible. Preserving roots: not possible."   His voice was mechanical, neutral, without uncertainty, without hesitation.   I nodded at him. I knew it had to be that way. But still…   As a child, I gave them names, as if that alone would be enough to make them more than what they were. But names do not shape awareness, nor recognition. They know their strength, their tasks—but they do not know themselves.   That is why I continue to experiment. I engrave new runes, alter their patterns, reshape magic until it not only commands, but perhaps one day allows thought. Not only reacting, but understanding.

The Struggle to Awaken Them

The current magic has led to many failures. More than once, an armor lay before me, ready to be brought to life—and yet it remained silent. The awakening has been the greatest obstacle.   Some runes were flawed, their magic flickered, but nothing happened. Other times, the construct moved—only for a brief instant, before falling back into complete stillness.   Each failure is a lesson. Each rune that does not work gives me clues about what is missing.   I alter the lines, reinforce the transitions between engravings, modify the original pattern of the old Animate, until I create a new structure—a rune that does not merely animate but perceives.

The Moment of Change

I have asked this question countless times. I have woven it into runes, bound it in magic, carried it in thought.   It has been a test, measuring my work—and it has failed me repeatedly.   But today, I asked it again. Not out of hope. Not out of expectation. Simply because it was the natural sequence.   I stood before Veyos, my newest Golem. The engravings on his surface were fresh, their magic still young and untamed.   The rune I had most recently embedded was different from the previous ones—one that did not just animate, but perceived.   I spoke the words. "Loosen the soil carefully. Free the roots from the earth so we can transplant them."   A moment of silence. Then Veyos moved.   Not immediately. Not mechanically.   He raised a hand, paused, his fingers opened slowly.   I saw that his movements were different from the others.   Not a rigid grip, not raw strength—but care.   His hands found the earth, touched it gently, felt it.   I held my breath as I watched.   He let the soil slip through his fingers, examined its texture, before grasping the roots— not too firmly, not too loosely.   Then he spoke. "Loosening: possible. Preserving roots: possible."   No stuttering mechanics, no blind obedience to a command.   An adaptation. An understanding.

A New Beginning

I nodded, but remained motionless.   Something within me tightened— Not joy, Not triumph, Just a deep pause.   I did not know whether to smile or weep.   After 25 years of failure, After countless engraved runes and discarded concepts, After defeats that nearly cost me my conviction— This was the first step.   Veyos had not just reacted. He had understood.   It is not yet perfection. It is not yet full consciousness. But it is something new. Something that must continue.   I write this report as a record.   Of the day a Golem became more than a tool.   For the Chronicles of the Mages, Elynn Stormhand
