Nut Dough Balls & Flatbreads from Seagrass Nuts

Gehe zur deutschen Version: Nußteigkugeln & Teigfladen aus Seegrasnüssen
During the time of the great expeditions, not only surface plants and animals were brought back, but also marine life – including the resilient seagrass. It would not survive in the icy plains of Nyrian, but in the artificially tempered warm zones near Galdra, it still thrives. Several small farms exist there, dedicated entirely to cultivating this last surviving aquatic plant.   The reason for this effort lies in the seagrass nuts, which are highly valued by the Frostfolk. To ensure sufficient production, seagrass requires light, calm waters, and a constant, gentle current to allow pollination of its blossoms. The water must also be warm and saline. Nearly all warm zones have been modified to create optimal conditions for seagrass cultivation.   The greatest challenge is light – but the mages of Galdra have developed some very specific solutions to overcome this obstacle. Their methods are mysterious, but effective.   Up to twice a year, the seagrass nuts are harvested, dried, and ground into fine flour. This flour is mixed with water and salty algae powder during preparation. From the dough, two popular forms are created:
  • Nut Dough Balls – small, dried treats eaten plain or soaked in broth
  • Flatbreads – rolled out thin and dried, used as a base for fillings
The flatbreads are either wrapped around various ingredients or folded into pockets filled with a variety of mixtures – depending on taste, occasion, or availability. Popular fillings include savory blends of fish pieces, algae leaves, or spiced fermented mussel paste.
