Ice Floe Festival

When the exiles finally came upon the first ice floe after many decades, they were overjoyed. This first floe promised them a homeland—one they only had to find. Even those who had long given up found new hope. In memory of that day, the (Ice) Floe Festival is celebrated every year.

Location and Meaning

People gather in Vintergard and Föndir, along the coast between the two cities. There, competitions are held, but also weddings and community initiations are joyfully celebrated. It is considered especially auspicious to be married or born on the 8th of Skumir.

Preparations and Traditions

Along the coast, tents and igloos are built to accommodate many people. Preparations usually begin three to four weeks in advance. These shelters offer food and drink, space to rest, or for ceremonies.   Traditionally, families walk from Vintergard to Föndir (or vice versa), visiting the various shelters along the way. They converse with those present, forge new friendships or rekindle old ones. People eat together, share stories, and sometimes witness a wedding—or even get married themselves. It’s not uncommon for young couples to decide spontaneously to wed.

Competitions

Various competitions take place along the coast:
  • Floe Rafting: Participants choose an ice floe and paddle from one marked point to another. But they’re not alone—others approach from the opposite side. The goal is to bump and push rivals off course while reaching the finish line.
  • Ice Slides: Up to ten teams build ice slides each year, which are judged by a commission and a crowd of eager children who test them thoroughly.
  • Strength Games: Events include lifting, throwing, carrying, and more.
  • The Floe Run: The highlight of the festival. The bravest Frostborn run from the shore out across the ice floes. The winner is the one who dares to go the farthest without falling into the sea, leaping from floe to floe.

Overnight by the Sea

Most try to return to the cities by evening—but space is limited. Many spend the night along the coast in tents and igloos.

Celebrations in Other Cities

Festivities also take place in Virkin, Skipti, and Galdra, though on a smaller scale. Those who can make the journey head to the coast—where the floes await.
