Diseases and Poisons

Heat and Cold

Frostborn are physically adapted to thrive in temperatures between -10 and -30 degrees Celsius. A thick layer of subcutaneous fat keeps them internally warm under these conditions. When temperatures drop further, they can enter a kind of stasis, surviving for several days with minimal energy consumption – hoping for rescue.   Heat, however, poses a serious challenge. Up to 0 degrees, it is merely uncomfortable, but the warmer it gets, the harder it becomes for Frostborn to cope. Their bodies are designed to retain heat, not release it – they cannot sweat. Overheating quickly leads to shock; they tire rapidly and feel as though they are burning from within, similar to a dangerously high fever.   Early signs of overheating include circulatory problems, increased breathing rate up to panting, and loss of appetite. Prolonged exposure leads to more severe symptoms: vomiting, balance issues, and unconsciousness. Organ damage may occur – especially to the heart, kidneys, and brain. In extreme cases, sustained overheating can be fatal.

Grey Fever

Outbreaks of the so-called Grey Fever occur periodically. No one knows where the disease originates or why it emerges. Since Frostborn cannot sweat, fever is inherently dangerous for them.   Grey Fever is identified by grey patches on the skin. These areas become rough, dry, and begin to flake. Internal heat burns away the fat reserves, which visibly diminish around the affected spots. Cold sensitivity increases, and the body attempts to generate more warmth – a deadly cycle.   Most isolated cases survive, but during the early settlement period, an epidemic nearly wiped out the population. One in three infected individuals died of Grey Fever. The best treatment is warmth through furs and blankets, plenty of fluids, and nourishing, unseasoned food.

Algae Plague

Along the coasts, outbreaks of the so-called Algae Plague occur regularly – far less so in inland settlements. The cause is a plant-based parasite. When boats return with seafood, they often carry this small algae, which is harmless unless ingested or introduced through a wound.   Once inside the body, it spreads slowly beneath the skin, forming fine root-like channels and feeding on the fat and blood of the Frostborn. It appears as green-blue vein-like discolorations under the skin, gradually expanding. It takes about two weeks to affect a hand – the larger the area, the faster the spread.   As fat reserves diminish, cold sensitivity increases. Early treatment is crucial. The procedure is painful: depending on the extent, one or more root channels are cut open and flushed with a special caustic solution. A soothing paste is then applied to the wound. The solution also damages fat tissue, which only partially recovers. If the algae is accidentally consumed, it causes severe abdominal pain for about a day until expelled. In rare cases, the plague affects internal organs – but only if internal injuries are already present.

Weeping Eyes

Those who stay outdoors without protecting their eyes during strong winds may develop Weeping Eyes. Tearing in response to wind, snow, and ice is normal and protective.   However, prolonged exposure without protection leads to overstimulation. The eyes begin to tear constantly, become crusted in the morning, and itch persistently – leading to frequent rubbing and further irritation. In small children, hands are sometimes bound at night or eye coverings are used during the day to prevent damage.   Weeping Eyes must be treated gently – by keeping the eyes closed and avoiding friction. Ignoring this can lead to Dry Eyes, where tear production stops due to blocked tear ducts. The eyes must then be artificially moistened and carefully rested. Some skilled healers can reopen the ducts. Magical healing may ease symptoms but does not cure the condition, as duct blockage is not considered a disease in itself.

Colds and Similar Illnesses

Frostborn do not suffer from colds or cold-related flu. Their adaptation to the environment is so complete that these illnesses are virtually nonexistent.

Poisons

There are many poisons in nature – both plant-based and animal-derived. Frostborn have no special resistance and react with typical symptoms depending on the toxin: paleness, paralysis, shortness of breath, unconsciousness, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
