Resubstantiation
I'm not even sure I should be sharing this information! In the process of researching for the articles on Ambrosia and Omicron and the Aimana, I came across a journal. Oh, Lions, I probably should not have even looked there, but I wanted to be thorough. And, I didn't put it all together until after the publication of those articles.
Maybe I shouldn't, but I need to tell the whole story - or as much of it as I can get out before someone comes. They will come!
Some time ago, I was socializing with other Nestori at the village below the Athenaeum. As happens, we drank, we had...experiences. And I saw what I had thought to be only a rumor. I do not think she meant for it to be seen, but there it was. The hip tattoo. Not just any hip tattoo, but the one rumored to mark only those rare Nestori specializing in the crossover between the Bastions of Craft and Creation and the Sciences of the Body. Specifically, where Arki Talents intersect with Mortuary Science. I will not describe the tattoo here.
From then on, I became obssessed with her studies. I befriended her, spent time with her, followed her, stalked her! I'm ashamed of it. But I needed to know what she was studying!
There was a room, deep in the bowels of the cellar that makes up the eighth point of the The Athenaeum Complex layout. There was an entry lock that required a combination of buttons, and I watched and memorized that combination. Then I went back when I knew she, and most others that used the cellar, would be asleep.
Oh, the books! Such rare manuscripts and records that I had never before laid eyes on, had only heard rumor of, if anything. It took two visits, then I got lucky!
The journal had been reinforced with newer cover and binding, but it had old....no, not old....ancient... information. It spoke of a substance, a food, that could resubstantiate the dead!! It confirmed what we believe of the dead being mere shades of their living selves, without awareness or consciousness, misty forms. But it described a recipe to reinvigorate them. I will not repeat that recipe here. The dead should - no, must! - stay dead. But the description of the substance was far too close to ones that we know or have evidence of existing. And now I am horrified by the implications.
Transmission & Vectors
Resubstantiation can be accomplished through consumption of a specific recipe. It requires, but is not limited to, human blood. Partial substantiation can temporarily be achieved with the blood alone, but not complete resubstantiation. I will not share the entire recipe here. The dead must stay dead. Fortunately, there is one component that is much rarer.
Causes
It seems the dead, as mindless as they are, are attracted to those they were connected to when living. Living people they knew, or are related to. When given the opportunity, they will seek them out, then be attracted to their blood. But as mentioned above, blood alone is a temporary and incomplete solution for them. The ...journal... I read described the substance as having a heavenly scent, sweet, floral, and musky, and a sweet taste with floral, woodsy, and spice notes. It was also described as varying in consistency between a thinner liquid and porridge. Is this Ambrosia?? It did not name it, but the description begs the question!! Is Ambrosia one and the same as Omicron's Aimana??? Alcides help us if it is!! The King...
Symptoms
When fully resubstantiated, the afflicted appears just as they did in the prime of their life. Thus, it is impossible to identify them by appearance alone. Their behavior, likewise, is what it would have been in life.
Treatment
They can be killed again. It is much more difficult, but possible. Use a mirror to enthrall them. The less resubstantiated they are, the better the mirrors work. Stab them in the heart, cut their head off, and transport their body back to the Underworld. Or, if the resubstantiation is partial or temporary, deny them the concoction they need, until they dissipate back into the ether, presumably returning to the Underworld themselves.
Affected Groups
Everyone can be affected by this, once deceased. Then the deceased are driven to consume human blood, potentially creating more dead, and it is neverending until the only ones who remain are the resubstantiated themselves. There has to be some way to stop it!! How are they getting out of the Underworld?? I don't know what to do. It's too horrific to contemplate!
