Wlastow

A small town, or large village depending on perspective, Wlastow is the main village of Wadi Ostean, an area of deep desert rife with resources for the knowledgeable to gather. Long has it been an area of both feast and famine, for as Barrax the Sage famously said, The Desert asks not before the sand reshapes you.

Demographics

There are humans, elves, halflings, and tieflings represented prominently in the small population.

Government

The people of the village work very hard to make a comfortable living for themselves, and do not cause many problems. For the most part, disagreements are settled between agreived parties, or Lady Isolde will be approached via a village Aldermaan to adjudicate contentious issues.

Defences

  • Lookout Post: Not a true fort, but a vantage for spotting bandits, desert raiders, or sandstorms.
  • Boundary Wall: A low wall made of mud bricks. Less for military defense, it is more to mark the village limits and keep out stray animals.
  • Industry & Trade

Salt production and transportation is the main business of Wlastow, although the industries needed for a hamlet to remain self sufficient are all represented here.

    Infrastructure

The town is built almost entirely of mud brick, and clad with a locally mixed ceramic mortar. It is small, but relatively well off due to their salt production. The oasis and raodways are maintained at the cost of the Lady, who also surreptitiously pays for building repairs and storm damage mitigation for village as well.   There are camel trains that provide transportation to and from the mines, for those miners that live in the village with their families, and the community provides water to all.

    Core Infrastructure

  • Salt Works: Evaporation pans, brine wells, or shallow pits where salt is harvested. This is likely the village’s main economic engine.
  • Salt Storage Works: Stone sheds for drying, storing, and weighing salt before it’s carted to Tulara.
  • Wagon road and cartwright's shed: A well maintained, packed dirt road linking Wlastow to Tulara, with space for wagons and carts to be repaired.
  • Civic & Communal Structures

  • Village Green or Commons: A small open space where meetings, markets, and seasonal fairs happen.
  • Meeting Hall: Doubles as a town hall, a festival shrine, and a schoolhouse.
  • Well: A reliable water source (vital in the Rhegev Desert).
  • Trade and Support

Cooper’s Workshop: Make barrels for salt transport. Teamsters’ Yard: Pens and stables for donkeys, mules, or oxen used in carting loads to the university. Smithy: Small forge for tools, wagon fittings, and horseshoes.

    Daily Life

  • Bakery & Tavern: Modest but central to village life. The tavern might cater to passing university buyers and teamsters.
  • A Few Farmsteads: Salt may be the export, but goats, hardy grains, and date palms supplement diets.
  • Herbalist / Healer’s Hut: Folk medicine and salt-preserving practices.
  • Guilds and Factions

  • The Miner's Exchange: A successfull collaborative effort led by miners to keep their pay and perks comfortable, the Exchange caters to all of the miners in the area, not just the "salt dogs". There are silver and platinum mines hereabouts, as well, and those workers also receive top notch remuneration.
  • The Cartwright's Collective: Wagon construction and repair is a big business in Wlastow, as the conveyances needed to transport salt back and forth to more habitable lands.
