The First Battle of the Gap, when a horde of savages (mainly Akulhai and giants) stormed down narrow valley and attempted to wrest JARNBORG from the humans. The attack was staged in the dead of winter, right as the Winter Solstice celebrations were starting. It also came at night. Only the brave and valiant efforts of the defenders, in the superior ancient fortifications save JARNBORG from falling to the horde. Additionally, by happenstance, an armed KVASSI EMPIRE envoy was meeting with their counterparts from the THE DWARVEN THRALLS at the time. They where discussing an alliance between the humans and the dwarves. This meant the ancient fort was bolstered by extra human and dwarven soldiers. The losses on both sides were staggering. Only a handful of humans and dwarves were left inside the castle, and the horde was nearly completely wiped out. Although the first four days of the battle were what are normally referend to in the name, fighting continued for a fortnight before the remnants of the horde were slain or retreated. This changed the attitude of the commanders of JARNBORG . They vowed to be ever vigilant, and unwavering, they vowed to never be caught off guard again. It also changed the trajectory of the human/dwarven alliance. Many very important humans and dwarves were slain in the battle. Some factions of the dwarves blamed the humans for the loss of their great warriors and leaders, saying that, had they been more vigilant, they may have avoided some of those deaths. This did not completely scuttle the alliance, but it did scale it back. dwarves and humans are on decent terms, but there are no allegiance contracts between the two races.
