Farlian - Ethnicity

Farlians are people who identify with the Farlian people and/or their culture.   The Farlian culture originates from the planet Farlia, but since its destruction, they have settled in new colonies, and planets, or live and work on spaceships.

For more information see: Farlian Traditional Fashion   Farlian fashion has a distinct difference between traditional clothing and modern clothing, with the latter having a lot more influence from other cultures in the galactic coalition. Some forms of traditional fashion have become a bit streamlined to be worn for everyday wear.   Traditional fashion tends to be based on the traditional clothing worn before the destruction of their home planet. It often includes robes, stoles, etc, and is often worn for formal wear. The traditional outfits often include elements like layering, square collars, and large sleeves.

Food

Farlians eat a wide variety of food both from their own planet and from others, however, since the destruction of their planet they have had to change the way they make food due to the change in ingredients and tools they have access to changing their recipes to be more accessible and versatile based on whatever they have available at the time.   They also often prefer long-lasting or non-perishable foods that they can store for long journeys in their ships.

Society

Settlements vs Travellers

After the destruction of their planet, Farlian survivors traveled in their ships into the territories of the galactic coalition.   Once in coalition territory and after being granted asylum many farlians settled down. Some settled in preexisting settlements, others formed new colonies, and still more took up a nomadic lifestyle taking up long-distance trade jobs to make use of their ships.   The sedentary versus nomadic lifestyles have caused a bit of a split in the culture with nomadic Farlians taking on more outside influence than those that settled in new colonies which tend to be self-isolating.

Naming

Farlian names are traditionally written family name first, then personal name, however, some families have shifted to going given name then family name as a way to fit in more with coalition society. Many Farlians still stick to the traditional way of writing and saying their names as a way of holding onto their culture while living amongst many different cultures and people.

Coming of Age

For more information see: Farlian Coming of Age   Coming of age is an important part of a young Farlian’s life and is an affair that involves the whole family. It involves gift-giving and storytelling and feasting, all of which are related back to the Farlian origins on their home planet of Farlia.

Spirituality

For more information see: Farlian Spirituality   The Farlians believe in a form of ancestral worship and ancestral spirits that can influence the living. Farlians also believe in some sort of afterlife, with prayers and offerings providing food and care to the dead while also encouraging a good relationship between the living and the dead.   Most Farlians are only loosely spiritual, more agnostic leaning than anything, with people simply maintaining and respecting the traditions, seeing the ancestor worship as more of a form of respect and remembrance with little effect on the wider universe even if they do believe in the ancestors and higher powers.
