Farlian Traditional Fashion

Farlian culture is influenced both by a desire to keep the traditions from before destruction of their homeworld alive as well as a need to adapt to their new environment. As such, there is a clear difference between traditional styles of clothing and more modernized styles of clothing.

Traditional styles of clothing, especially the more fancy super traditional versions, are often worn for formal wear while adapted modernized versions tend to be worn for more casual everyday wear especially by Farlians living in Farlian majority areas.

Clothing

Base layer

The basic layer of a farlian outfit is made up of a round neck or high necked tunic, typically with long, sometimes very wide, sleeves. Tops are typically worn tied in place at the side of the chest or are worn by being pulled over the head. The bottoms of an outfit are typically either a skirt of a pair of trousers.

Dresses and full length robes are uncommon for a base layer, and most outfits are made with the top and bottom being separate articles of clothing.

Outer layer

The outer layer of clothing is mainly used to keep warm or to add a fancy outer layer for a formal outfit.

Longer robes and jackets are commonly worn even for everyday wear, The sleeves of these garments are often wide and loose, especially for flashier formal wear. These types of outer layers will typically have square necklines and clasps that keep the garment closed at the front. Longer outer garments, like long robes, may be secured with a sash alongside the clasps, to make it more secure.

Another common outer garment is a poncho-like garment made from a square of fabric with a line cut down the middle to form the collar. This garment is often worn by older community members and is considered a garment worn by family elders especially for formal and spiritual occasions.

A smaller article of clothing, the apron or waist skirt may also be worn, typically over a skirt bottom that adds some extra color and decoration to an outfit as well as in more casual outfits be made into a pouch to carry small items.

Shoes

Headgear

Crescent Headdress

An upside down crescent shaped hairpiece or headdress is often worn by women at the crown of the head, with the formal versions being quite large and flashy compared to the smaller everyday styles. These hairpieces are typically only worn by married or older women.

The hair may be parted and wrapped around the piece to give their hair a crescent like shape. These versions are typically made of wire and may use extensions to ensure the desired shape is achieved.

The versions that do not have the hair wrapped around it, are typically made out of metal and incorporate tassels, beads, and other pendants for decoration.

Hairstyles

A high bun at the top or crown of the head is the most common traditional style regardless of gender. Hair pins, headbands, and decorative ties are often worn especially for more showy or formal hairstyles.

Women will typically wear their hair at least partly in a high bun. Half up half down styles are common for young girls or unmarried women, while married women are more likely to wear their hair in a simple high bun, common for more working class or casual styles, or in the crescent dress styles, for more formal or showy styles.

Men will typically wear variations of the high bun with some wearing their buns a bit further back on the head, which is considered a more masculine style. Men will commonly also wear a headband that helps keep flyaways out of the face and secure the bun further.

Jewelry

Most jewelry is made out of beads, typically using semi precious gemstones or more modern materials. Long pendant earrings are often worn for formal wear, as are rings.

A common everyday piece of jewelry is a set of prayer beads worn in the form of long beaded necklaces that both add decoration to the outfit as well as being used for spiritual prayers. Smaller versions of prayer beads, made into bracelets may also be worn.
