Tragora is the capital and the most populous city of
Hargel. Tragora was founded by Palabrani settlers several centuries ago as an agricultural settlement. Since then, it has grown into a large city—the center of Hargellish politics and culture. The
grand princess makes her residence here when she is not traveling with her tribe—and the tribes as a whole meet in Tragora three times a year to discuss matters of state.
According to the most recent census, Tragora has a total population of roughly 206,000, of which about 154,000 live in the city year-round. About 70% of the human population is ethnically Hargellish, with a large Palabrani minority making up about 15% of the population. Small enclaves of Mandraganians, Nadeshis, and Ocustrines make up most of the remaining 15%.
Some spirits also call Tragora home. Most common are unicorns. Unicorns have gravitated towards human civilization over time. While most of them are still wild, there are some that have taken up residence within the city's stables—including the Royal Unicorn, who lives in the Royal Stables.
Whichever tribe controls the Hargellish throne is in charge of maintaining order and providing services in Tragora. Historically, this role has gone to the Todorgah, who appoint members to Tragora's city council. Sometimes these are family appointments, and other times they are given in recognition of great deeds.
Tragora has high walls that protect it on all sides from incursions—remnants of Palabrani rule. Security for the city is provided by the Todorgah, who are appointed to look after the city. Guard assignments in Tragora are seasonal—with members of the guard switching out once every three months.
Most of the buildings in old Tragora were constructed by Palabranis, and use Palabrani architectural styles, making liberal use of domes, stone columns, and archways. Tragora Palace and the Tragoran Basilica are perhaps the most well-known Tragoran buildings in this style. More recent buildings employ a more spartan architectural style, moving towards a more authentically Hargellish style. These buildings often exhibit rounded shapes, stark white coloring, and utilitarian design elements.
