Uplinas

The city of Uplinas is one of the major city states of the Athis Val confederation, and is often called "the city of knowing" for housing the prestigious Zlans bardic college, the Fraron university of magic, and the independant complex known as The Binder's Sanctum. These institutes collaborate closely and have turned the city into a bastion of learning known all throughout Ussath Riel.   The walled city is curiously shaped like a perfect hexagon. The northern tip of the hexagon is dominated by The Binder's Sanctum, while the South-east and South-west corner are dominated by the Zlans bardic college and the Fraron university of magic respectively. By tradition, most of the housing, workplaces and buildings supporting each institute are situated in the hexagon's corner to the respective right of the institute itself, in effect causing the hexagon to have three axes which are dominated by, and reflect the insitute housed in it. The centre of the hexagon on the other hand is a busy hive of shops, taverns, and public buildings, like the city council building.   Uplinas' focus on learning is not just reflected in the city layout, but also in the make-up of it's population, housing a exceptionally large concentration of students, teachers and scholars. This has also caused the city to employ a relatively large guardforce to contain any would-be rowdy students.
