Aynon

The city of Aynon, also known as "New Aynir" is the capital of Ithleon and the largest city on the face of Ussath Riel. After the fall of the Valmith empire, the splitting up of it's former territory, and the abandonment of the old capitol Aynir, Marius Ithleon started the ambitious project of erecting a new capital that would surpass the old one. Marius chose to designate the small town of Feldham, the birthplace of Marius, as it's site, maintaining the old core of the settlement (now known as the "old town" district) but erecting a massive, planned city around it. Surrounding the "old town" are several more districts, each surrounded by a curtain wall, lined with watchtowers. A square grid of cobblestone roads connects the various districts and the buildings within, giving the city a rigid, orderly appearance.   The main landmark of the city is the massive cathedral of the unsleeping eyes, situated at Helm's square in the centre of the city. The cathedral sports an immense watchtower that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and it is the main centre of the state religion in service of Helm, and it doubles as the seat of power for Marius Ithleon himself as head of both the nation and the state religion. Across from the cathedral at Helm's square is Guardian castle, the base for the The Order of the Ever Watchfull Eye. Flanking the square on the east-west axis are the city hall and courthouse, respectively. The importance of all these buildings have caused Helm's square to become a focal point for the city, despite the absence of shops, taverns or other public buildings that would usually attract large crowds.   Most of the city is planned and built in a very structured and orderly fashion. An advanced sewage system, built with the help of engineers from Hir Taruhm, along with strict rules against leaving waste or other mess, causes the city to be very clean. Mandatory guard service, along with a system of watchtowers and barracks interspersed throughout the system, results in a heavy guard presence at all times. This guard presence, coupled with the seen- and unseen presence of the inquisition, have caused the city to remain extremely orderly and peaceful with very low levels of crime and disorderly conduct.
