Athena Transition Guide

The new Athena, or the Articles and World Manager, does most of what the old one could do and then some. The official Guide to the Articles & World Manager covers a lot of that. The problem is, if you're used to the old version, it can be hard to find all those same features in the new one, especially when you want to get straight to writing and not search around for buttons.   The point of this guide is to help you do exactly that. The first part is what you need to know to get to work right away. The second part is a more comprehensive comparison of where various options live now.

Quick Start Guide

I'm only here for WorldEmber, how do I get to writing as fast as possible?
— You, maybe

New Articles

  • Use Article at the bottom of the Tree menu to create an uncategorized article, or
  • Hover over an existing category or article and use to create a child article.
In either case, set the article name first and let it save before you get to writing.

Completing Stubs

  • Use the top-left dropdown to filter to Stubs (< 50 words), or
  • Use for more sorting and searching capabilities, such as finding stubs of a specific template.
  • New! Once you've selected an article, use to reset the create date.

General Writing

Use PROMPTS to add template-specific prompts and content sections (Sections tab on the old editor).
  • Add all prompts to the current article with PROMPTS and . Unused fields turn off when you navigate away.
  • The "Article Expanded Prompts" option in your Features menu toggles making all prompts visible all the time.

General Browsing

Use next to your World name to Toggle State Indicators to show icons for published and privacy, similar to the old interface. You can click these icons to toggle that state without opening the article.
  • Bonus: From your Features menu, you can enable WIP indicators that will show for WIP and for Done.

Finishing

Publish your article by clicking the yellow circle to turn it pink. Toggle privacy with the padlock icon. When Private, you'll see an icon to set subscriber groups.
  • The Socials menu is where you'll notify followers, send to discord, and add to homepage (previously add to recent).
  • To submit to a challenge, use . This is also where you'd un-submit an article.

Quick Tips

Old Edit
Old edit won't be removed until the new version is at least as good. Access the old article edit with on articles and categories.

New! Animations
If you don't like the slide-out or slide-down of Athena/Notebook, head to your Features menu and Enable the option to Disable animations (I know).

You can open most things in a new tab with middle mouse button, right click + open in new tab, or .

Stats
To see multiple article stats in a table view, use Brigid . The new layout only shows the stat you're sorting by.

Troubleshooting
If something's weird, use next to your world name to refresh or hard reset.

Ordering
Drag and drop requires click and hold, and should be reliable. Position is only available in the old editor.

Known* Issues

*Check bug reports for the most up-to-date information.
Extra Spaces
The new interface adds extra line breaks. You can work around it by either removing line breaks on the edit side or doing a final save in the old edit.

New! Word Count
The word count and last saved timestamp at the bottom aren't updating live and require a refresh.

Category Menu
  • Get this view by changing the dropdown to categories only
  • Create new categories using the +Category button (top-level category) or the button on an existing category (sub-category)
  • To reorganize categories, click, hold, then drag. This should be more reliable than the old version was.
Type Menu
  • Change the dropdown to template type and select your template, or
  • Expand and open advanced
List Menu
  • No longer available:

    • view as,
    • more filtering options,
    • ability to filter a list more

Draft/published & public/private indicators
  • Can click on an article to see them by the title, or
  • beside your World name to toggle on in the list. Be warned that these indicators are also clickable to change those states. Makes it quick and easy to change, but could make it happen accidentally
Buttons
  • Most are now under when hovering over an article or category
  • This includes delete, copy mention, copy block, open in old edit, view in world, and more
  • Create a new article from the +article button (uncategorized) or the button on an existing category or article (sets the existing one as the parent of the new one)
Quick article stats
  • Could previously click an article to show its stats, or enable an expanded view that did so for all articles in the current view
  • Now if you sort your articles by a stat, such as most liked, you'll see that value beside the article. However, there's currently no view that shows all basic stats on your articles.
  • To see all such stats, you need to open an article. Word count is at the bottom, most other stats are in the socials menu.
  • Otherwise, use Brigid.

Right Side Panel

Category edits
  • Can toggle category public/private with state indicator or by opening the article.
  • Open the category to change subscriber groups, name, main content.
  • Most things will require opening the category in old edit for now.

  • Linear navigation (previous/next article) is in , Advanced.
  • Position isn't part of the new interface (yet?), click and drag should be reliable but you may still need to rely on position, especially if you already have it set for other articles in that category. To access it, open the article in the old version

Homepage & Styling

I can't access the old world configuration and world styling menus to do a proper comparison, so this part will be less specific than the others.

Homepage

  • To edit general content on your homepage, open Athena and select your World from the articles list. All changes should auto-save, same as an article would.
  • To edit subtitle and credits, open Settings from the bottom bar and scroll down to Advanced
  • Widgets can be rearranged or turned off from the main page, and toggled from the Settings menu
  • Most World settings are now here, including social media and privacy settings.
  • Global Content, such as the copyright footer, is still in World Configuration.
    • Go to Advanced Settings will take you to World Configuration.
    • You can also still access it from the left sidebar, followed by

Styling

  • Whitelabeling, World cover, global cover, and page background are now in the menu when editing your homepage.
  • Theme, custom CSS, Bootstrap, and other options are still in the legacy World Styling Menu.
    • Similar to before, Go to Advanced Settings from the Styling menu will take you to the legacy one.
    • You can also still access World Styling from the left sidebar, followed by

Author's Notes

The irony is I had to write this using the old edit because the new one currently adds extra spaces between every list.   If you notice anything wrong, missing, outdated, or otherwise confusing, please leave a comment with what's not right and I'll fix it ASAP!
