Nightbrother ([naɪtbɹʌðɚ])

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Much of the history and livelihood of the Nightbrothers remains unknown to the vast majority of the galaxy. It is surrounded by legends perpetuated by the Nightbrothers, Nightsisters, and even the Jedi, which made it difficult to learn anything concrete about them. In turn, the Nightbrothers became incredibly territorial and hostile to outsiders, intentionally keeping their ways unknown to anyone outside their clans. The only trusted—albeit slightly biased—source of information was the Jedi Riadín, who lived with the Nightbrothers for several months on a research mission.

Her reports indicate that the Nightbrothers were a warrior society that lived in separate warrior clans led by a Nightbrother Leader and their second-in-command, the Nightbrother Lieutenant. In some cases, the Nightbrother's leadership could reside in a Nightsister or even an outsider who earned their begrudging loyalty through force, strength, fear, or all of the above. However, Riadín noted that this was rare.

The Nightbrothers' respect for power and honour led them to fight and compete in a combat arena. As warriors, Nightbrothers ranged in having strength and fighting abilities comparable to other humanoids to being impressively powerful fighters. They were best known for their agile and acrobatic style of fighting, which they used to gain an advantage over their enemies and opponents. Furthermore, although they were not trained in magicks, the proximity to the Nightsisters' magickal ichor granted them enhanced reflexes and perception.

This magickal ichor led many Nightbrothers to be Force-sensitive, though most of them weren't powerful enough to be trained. Those who were strong enough with the Force were occasionally trained as "male adepts," warriors capable of using the Force to enhance their physical abilities, but never more unless it was the will of the Nightsisters.

Coming of Age Rites

While their body tattoos were bestowed upon them by fellow Nightbrothers or specialist artists, facial tattoos were a symbol given by the mother. When the young Nightbrothers were old enough to fight, their Nightsister mother would tattoo their faces with symbols that often mirrored their own tattoos. This served both as a sign of pride and ownership for the Nightsisters over their male counterparts and children.

In rare cases where male children and their mothers lived outside Dathomir, or if the mother was exceptionally kind, the tattoos were viewed as a sign of belonging and affection. The facial tattoos of Nightbrother children adopted by outsiders were typically a symbol of commitment, dedication and devotion.

Common Taboos

The Nightsisters also forbade practice of magick to the Nightbrothers and disallowed membership into their clans.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The male warriors were subservient to the Nightsisters. Dominating the Nightbrothers both physically and politically, the Nightsisters' treatment of them was often cruel, and they were often relegated to being their servants, muscle, bodyguards, and breeding stock.

Brutal treatment from the Nightsisters was seen a necessity on their end to keep them compliant and obedient due to Zabrak Nightbrothers possessing a higher tolerance of pain. Although mostly obedient, the Nightbrothers had great kinship with one another and constantly sought to protect one another from the whims and demands of the Nightsisters.
