Bolomar Uprising

The Bolomar Uprising was an internal conflict within the  Grand Duchy of Canyndor during the years of 7581 till 7585. The purpose of this conflict lay with the intention of the Osteruna Dynasty, largely led by Lord Tuorvo of Larasand, to re-establish the old Petty Kingdom of Bolot that once occupied the south-western provinces of Doria in the days before the Silver King. The conflict initially went in favour of the Osteruna forces, who captured strategic positions along the Yarrow River and held out against initial attempts by the Grand Duke to reassert dominance in the region. It would not be until Grand Duke Urho II made a crucial alliance with the Valapja family whose holdings and network of vassals on the southern shores of Lake Tegra proved an invaluable resource in the effort to quell the uprising. Such an arrangement was only made possible through the keen negotiating aptitude of the Grand Duke's chamberlain, Susi Woljoka, whose connections through not only the Grand Duke's court but also its innumerable guests allowed him to identify the Valapja family's rather tenuous monetary position and the highly beneficial partnership that could be struck.   Another conceivable factor in the outbreak of the uprising is the aftermath of the Redcrest Reclaimation War that Grand Duke Urho participated in along with Toranian allies to reconquer the inner lands of the Redcrest Mountains mountains that was previously lost to the Kingdom of Redoria. While the war was ultimately a success for the Kingdom of Torania and in a sense Grand Duke Urho himself due to the strong alliances he made, the war resulted in a great deal of debt to the crown and this resulted in increased taxes to recoup such losses. This perhaps disproportionately affected those of the Surcounty of Ilkweir due to the further taxes imposed on trade passing by river through Canyndor which constitutes a heavy portion of the south-western economy.

The Conflict

Prelude

The Bolomar Uprising could be aptly described as a familial dispute, the leaders of the two primary factions being brothers by marriage. Lord Tuorvo was married to Grand Duke Urho's elder sister, Lilja, who had birthed him a son which they name Urho in honour of her brother. The origins of the dispute can obviously be traced back to the times of the Old Kingdom of Bolot, however, the more accepted catalyst for the conflict is far more modern. It stems back to the death of the old Surcount of Ilkweir, Valto Osteruna, who had died rather unexpectedly and without a clear inheritance of his extensive holdings in the region. It would be up to the then Grand Duke,  Joonas III, to mediate the distribution of the late Surcounts holdings. Of course, as the eldest son, Vilho was always destined to inherit the Surcounty of Ilkweir and its primary ancestral holdings, yet Joonas showed particular favouritism to Vilho by also granting him many of the more minor holdings in the lower regions of the surcounty, much to the bemusement of the young Tuorvo. Far be it though for Joonas to leave any party satisfied, as he then ordered such minor holding granted to Vilho would be kept under "guardianship" by his auntie Pahva Ilkitala, Lady of Paybridge, till such time as the then seventeen-year-old Vilho reached the "advanced age of manhood". It should not need to be explained why then at the ripe old age of 53 that Vilho and his brother Tuorvo were enraged that such holding had not yet been returned to them despite a further three Grand Duke's being petitioned on the matter.

Deployment

The conflict is said to have truly begun on the 1st of Maati 7581 when Lord Tuorvo and his banners began marching from Larasand to the river crossing at Rapjena to secure it for their cause. After arriving on the 3rd and securing the village and imprisoning all locals loyal to the Grand Duke, they would continue south along the Silas river to Silaspjo where they could secure the only bridge on the river north of Ilkweir. They would arrive in the town on the 7th meeting little resistance, on the same day Tuorvo would receive a letter from the Bishop of Jade Hall offering support to his cause under the guarantee that no more than a minimum garrison force would enter the Bishop's land. Tuorvo and his forces remained near Silaspjo for several days, considering an assault on Ariinen Castle, the seat of House Palvelijati, who could just as easily be an invaluable ally as an insurmountable foe. Choosing not to test their resolve, Tuorvo would set out to reach Ilkweir which he did on the 21st and would proceed to persuade his elder brother, Surcount Vilho, to commit his forces to the cause. Vilho had tacitly condoned the actions of his younger brother earlier on the 16th when he sent a declaration out to his vassals that he would act as a mediator between his brother and the Grand Duke, though claiming it would avoid bloodshed, many believed Vilho was simply biding his time till he could determine the winning side and place himself on it.   Many point to the 22nd as the true start date of the conflict, as this is when the Bolomari forces finally began their foray into what could be described as loyalist, ducal territories. Now split into two separate armies, Lord Tuorvo would push east towards the port city of Anttegra while his son, known as Little Tuorvo, ventured south to secure the allegiance of the primary crossing settlements of the Resuli and Silas rivers. Perhaps the first battle, though more aptly described as a heated tussle, would occur on the 28th of Maati just south of the castle settlement of Valapja, seat of the eponymous dynasty. The marshal of Ilkweir, at this time undeclared in loyalty either to the Grand Duke or the Bolomari forces, met the convoy of Lord Tuorvo on the road eastwards. Marshal Turo of house Valapja was clearly outraged by the actions of Tuorvo and his faction, and he sought to arrest the rogue Lord. Tuorvo sought to do likewise and the clash resulted in the Bolomari forces capturing many of the Marshals house banners while the Marshal himself fleed northward. Casualties were limited though it is noted several minor nobles died during the struggle. The next day Little Tuorvo had captured Silasgate allowing passage into the province of Anttegra, he would lead the pursuit of Marshal Turo while his father continued on to siege the city of Anttegra which he would begin on the 3rd of Huhti.

The Siege of Anttegra would truly be the point of no return in the conflict, though far from a typically death ridden siege, it was now an attack on the Ilkitala Dynasty itself. The aim of the siege was to secure the major port of the city and a base from which they could control travel along the Yarrow. While travel in and out of the city by foot had been stopped, travel via the lake still continued until Little Tuorvo, who ceased pursuing Marshal Turo, arrived in Kukkalapja on the 7th of Huhti where he could blockade the city from the north. In spite of the aggression from the Bolomari forces, the response from the Grand Duke and his allies was described as "incompetently slow", perhaps due to the debts of the crown and the reluctance of the banners to enter yet another conflict. The siege of the city continued, the attackers soon resorting to pillaging the surrounding lands to supply themselves, all the while the Grand Duke and his Marshal were slowly organising the assembly of forces to be rallied at Partador and Paybridge. The rest of Huhti would pass with few events of note, mostly the opposing side gathering forces and making diplomatic moves, justifying potential outcomes. Only as Saati came would the main players begin making moves once again, starting with Lord Henri of Turmetala who began leading his own forces north to secure the town of Tellamana, held by the Proviss Vuorima, he would arrive on the 5th and be welcomed by the Mari of the town despite the neutral stance of the Proviss. While the Siege of Anttegra continued, Urho II sent an official writ to his cousin Lord Fyodr of Paybridge on the 12th instructing him to make haste to Ilkweir to enter formal talks with the Surcount. Fyodr took to such duties swiftly and arrived in Ilkweir with a small personal guard on the 18th where he continued largely fruitless negotiation with the Surcount for several days. After the subsequent news of the gathering of Grand Marshal Harvor of Canyndor forces at Partador on the 25th and then the surrender of Anttegra on the 28th.

After reports from his cousin of the unwillingness of Surcount Vilho to reign in his brother, likely due to his inability to do so, Urho II began the assembly of his forces to make way to Paybridge, Grand Marshal Harvor likewise began marching his forces through Kasta's Pass towards Anttegra to relieve it of its occupiers. Harvor would begin the counter siege of Anttegra on the 1st of Kesa, employing all the tactics associated with general warfare. Meanwhile, Urho and his allies had fully mustered their banners at Paybridge on the 10th and the battle for control of Lake Tegra had now tipped in favour of the Grand Duke, with this Little Tuorvo withdrew from the landing at Kukkalapja and began to retreat to Ilkweir. Lord Tuorvo held out in Anttegra until the month of Hejna when supplies began to dwindle and he and his forces surrendered themselves on the 9th. Many imagined this would be the end of the trouble as the main agitator of the conflict had been arrested, however, with Anttegra relieved Harvor and his forces travelled to Paybridge so that Tuorvo could answer to the Grand Duke. On the road north, Tuorvo managed to escape his bindings and fled from his captors back Ilkweir. Hostility would largely cease over the harvest period, the majority of nobles in the region still taking a neutral stance on the conflict. At a standstill, Urho II did not want to tempt a continuation of open warfare, instead he tried to allow a delegation of neutral nobles to further mediate the matter. The delegation would include the Bishop of Kilncross, the Bishop of Eidehn and the High Diplomat of the Aijian Republic, Hedfeld Oeren of Tadlaw. Unfortunately, the delegation failed to make serious breakthroughs as both sides refused the other demands. At this point, Urho II and Turo Valapja especially demanded the personal surrender of Lord Tuorvo, while the Bolomari faction were demanded the succession of all land claimed by the Osteruna dynasty as well as vast privileges in law.

The Engagement

During the course of the entire conflict, only two sieges and two pitched battles were fought between Bolomar forces and Ducal forces. The first siege was carried out by Bolomar forces at Anttegra, followed by the siege of Larasand during the fall of 7583. The first pitched battle between the belligerents would be fought near Silaspjo, where Bolomar forces would secure a stunning victory that left Ducal forces reeling. What followed was largely a game of cat and mouse between forces as they moved throughout the Surcounty attempting to secure advantageous positions as well as the support of as of yet neutral parties. The second battle would be fought in 7585 at Kolli's Hill in the southwest of the Surcounty and resulted in the decisive victory for Ducal forces, the death of Tuorvo Osteruna and his son Henri.
