Summer Radio Festival

Each year in August, KNTC hosts a festival in the center of town. For one week, food vendors, art booths, carnival rides, games, and other vendors line every street in downtown Red Oak Bluffs. The event is a celebration of everything that makes the town unique, and has become a major draw for other nearby towns. All throughout the week, there are radio contests: karaoke, call-in trivia and music quizzes, and a town scavenger hunt. Music and art are the biggest draws of the event, with local bands playing every day and art of all types on full display. The Summer Festival continues no matter the weather, with dedicated indoor events and spaces to   Capping the end of the Summer Radio Festival is the KINETIC Race, an agility course that starts in Town Square and ends at the Red Oak Radio Tower. Obstacles made of logs and rope courses form an intimidating trail of athletic tests that lead to the radio tower. Winners of the KINETIC Race are awarded at closing ceremonies with prizes from local businesses, an engraved trophy, and a hefty $1,000 cash prize.

History

At first, the summer festival was just a town tradition for a month lacking other big holidays. When KNTC was established, they joined and added to the festivities, but were not the official hosts of the celebration.   Town records show the tradition was even older than most would assume, and at the core of the celebration, long before typical festival fare was added, were the athletic games and competitions. Strangely, it has been found that most of the original competitions focused on agility rather than strength, as one would expect from a town that was founded on logging. It seems that it was important to the original settlers to be able to move quickly and with sure footing through the dark forest...
