Zandaria
Pronunciation: zan-DARR-ee-uh
Map Index: G9, G10, H9, H10
Location: On the coast in west central Nhulokkarnum
Description: Located in the heart of west central Nhulokkarnum, the land of Zandaria beckons travelers with its great rolling plains of savanna grassland interspersed with scattered trees. The great seas of grass stretch unbroken except by the small, forested areas that surround watering holes. The tall grasses of the plains, provide a home to diverse wildlife, including large herds of antelopes and gazelles, along with predators like leopards and cheetah.
Primary Population: Chuuli
Secondary Population: Ansharri
Minor Population: Valmyrri
Climate: Zandaria’s tropical climate, dominated by sweltering heat for much of the year, undergoes a dramatic transformation during a three-month window when suddenly abundant rainfall transforms the parched arid landscape into a lush haven of new growth. The remaining months witness a return to scorching temperatures with only sporadic thunderstorms, leaving much of the land parched and dry. Windy weather duiring this dry time of year will often bring dust storms sweeping across the plains.
While the western part of Zandaria thrives with its bustling cities and towns along the coast, the eastern regions remain sparsely populated, haunted by native predators and monstrous aberrations dwelling in the treacherous mountains.
Residents: The citizens of Zandaria consist of primarily of humans, dominately of Chuuli heritage though some Anshari blood is likely intermixed. In addition, a small minority of the population consists of humanoids that became corrupted by the chaos storms of the Great Cataclysm. The Ganzi, horribly transformed humanoids, predominately populate the wild lawless areas of Zandaria. Their appearance widely varies with one or two unusual physical qualities. Deemed mostly untrustworthy, the government and most citizens look down upon them and treat them as inferior. In cities, they usually occupy the poorest areas.
The Tengu, crow-like humanoids, while still living in communities on the fringes of civilization, have also integrated themselves into the urban areas of Zandaria.
The Tiefling, humanoids with varying fiendish looking traits, live throughout Zandaria, especially in cities.
Government and Politics: Zandaria's history intertwines with the once-mighty Chuulonian Empire, which crumbled in the wake of the Great Cataclysm. The empire's collapse left Zandaria on its own and struggling for survival. Despite slow progress, the kingdom has finally managed to reach relative stability. Now an independant nation rather being a province of the Chuulonian Empire, a shah rules the land.
Although now independant, Zandaria maintains civil relations with the Chuulonian Empire along with the other civilized nations in Nhulokkarnum.
Economy: Best known as a trade capital, Zandaria's large merchant fleet sails the Sea of Beledor trading locally produced goods for exotic merchandise from far off lands.
Military: Zendaria continues using the wealth generated by taxes on trade to expand its military. Now at the point where their troops can finally adaquately gaurd their cities, hope for the future brightens as new units of soldiers get deployed to the civilized reaches of the kingdom.
History: During the Great Cataclysm, coastal settlements were destroyed, either by being submerged beneath the sea by the sudden sinking of the land, or washed away by gigantic tsunamis which repeatedly struck the coast. Further inland, the land was ravaged by devastating earthquakes which brought down most buildings and left cities and towns in rubble. Finally, great chaos storms further wreaked havoc among the survivors, claiming many lives and corrupting the very essence of the inhabitants who were caught up in them.
Today: Today, mysterious stone ruins stand as silent witnesses to a long-lost era of advanced knowledge, showing the stark contrast between the past and the present. Many cities and towns have these old ruins in their midst, and it is readily apparent that today’s builders lack the skill to match the resplendent and sophisticated architecture of their ancestors. The long journey to reclaim the former glory of this land will be filled with many trials, in both the now untamed wilderness of the east and in dealing with the remnants of devastation along the coast. The challenges remain great but Zandaria endures, driven by the spirit of its people.
