Uhrx Mountains
Pronunciation: OO-ruks
Map Index: F9, F10, G10
Location: North central Nhulokkarnum
Geography: The Uhrx Mountains, an ancient and weathered range, traverse the heart of northern Nhulokkarnum, bearing the scars of long-lost ages of existence. Stretching northwest to southeast, these mountains exhibit a highly dissected landscape, crisscrossed by streams that dwindle in the arid summer months. Small trees and shrubs dot the slopes, along with short grasses adapted to the harsh conditions.
These formidable mountains, ranging from 2,300 to 4,200 feet in elevation, harbor treacherous secrets. The northern expanse remains largely uncharted due to its perilous nature. Tales of great fire breathing dragons may explain why so few return from this area.
Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None
Climate: The subtropical savanna climate ranges from warm weather with ample winter rainfall to scorching heat and little rainfall in summer.
Wildlife: Due to predation by red dragons, wildlife in the northern reaches of the mountains near Ansharr is scarce. Elsewhere the common species include antelopes, leopards, warthogs, eagles, and hawks, along with a profusion of smaller mammals.
Humanoids: Vile aberrations lurk in rocky crags, posing grave threats to unwary travelers. The most common, the Astomoi, lurk in dark hidden areas of the mountains. A strange humanoid with no eyes or mouth, these former humans found themselves forever corrupted by the chaos storms. They appear to be made of pure darkness and live in the Uhrx Mountain area of Ansharr, The Dragon Lands, Daalor, and Yxtan.
Monsters: The northern part of the mountains is home to an ancient red dragon and her brood. In the southern half of the mountains, common monsters are cave giants, ferrous giants, trolls, giant snakes, and rocs.
History: The Uhrx Mountains, bear witness to the Great Cataclysm's impact, a cataclysmic event that further shaped their rugged contours and intensified their dangers. Rock slides reshaped many peaks while chaos storms, sweeping up from the south devastated all life within their path.
Today: The mountains continue to be a land of fear with dragons and monsterous humanoids presenting real dangers.
