Daalor
Pronunciation: DAY-lore
Map Index: F9, F10
Location: Northwest coast of Nhulokkarnum
Description: Once a thriving kingdom renowned for its rare and exotic resources, Daalor now stands as a haunting testament to a long forgotten era. The land bears the scars of the Great Cataclysm that ravaged it, reducing much of the once-flourishing realm to desolation and peril. Today, only three inhabited cities remain, each ruled over by its own malevolent demon overlord.
Beyond the walls of these cities, the land of Daalor stretches as a desolate and hazardous expanse, teeming with menacing creatures that prowl its rugged terrain. The land, plagued by arid conditions for much of the year, withers under the scorching sun. Yet, when the rainy season arrives, torrential downpours trigger catastrophic floods and treacherous landslides.
Residents: The cities are populated almost exclusively by humans. Visiting sailors of other races are occasionally found in the ports of Bakus Shogr and Ruzar Shogr. The ruler of each city is a powerful demon lord.
Primary Population: Ansharri
Secondary Population: Chuuli
Minor Population: Movori, Veng
Government and Politics: A powerful demon lord independantly rules each city. These demons are all powerful within their realm and are assisted by fanatical followers that do their bidding. Daalor is an isolated land with no real connection to the outside world other than foreign ships visiting its harbors.
Economy: The economies of the three demon ruled cities remain fully dependant upon trade with the outside world. Despite the unpredictable dangers posed by its powerful demon ruler, fearless merchants still brave Bakus Shogr’s port, enticed by the allure of rare goods and exotic spices, some of which can be found nowhere else. The economy of Jishrash Shogr is based on its extremely productive adamantine ore mines. After mining, the ore is transported by trains of horses that haul great wagons to Ruzar Shogr. Here it is smelted down to create the extremely hard metal known as adamantine that is highly prized for weapons and armor. This valuable metal is then sold to foreign merchants who are willing to brave the great dangers of the port for the opportunity to buy this rare metal.
Military: The three demon ruled cities have no common military and do not cooperate with each other for a mutual defense. Rather, each city is solely protected by their own military and the might of its ruling demon. All three cities favor infantry for defending their walled cities from dangers. As archers patrol the walls, fanatical foot soldiers maintain absolute control of the populace. While no foreign humanoid threats exist nearby, the land of Daalor is filled with dangerous beasts that present a grave danger to all travelers. Unconfirmed rumours claim that red dragons from Ansharr occasionally fly over the northernmost reaches of the land.
History: The land of Daalor was once a small thriving kingdom known for its exotic gardens and native rare herbs. When the Great Cataclysm hit, the kingdom swiftly fell into chaos. The capital city and its entire population was swept away by a series of massive tsunamis that hit without warning. With its king dead and most of the army drowned, little stood between ravening hordes of abberations and outsiders sweeping up out of the south and the vulnerable citizens in the countryside. Most of the land's population was slaughtered in these dark days and in the end only three cities survived. However, a dark fate awaited as each of these cities, as they each became ruled terranically by a great demon lord.
Today: Bakus Shogr, the largest and most prosperous of the cities, is an ancient, fortified seaport. Having survived the Great Cataclysm relatively intact, its impressive tall stone walls and spiked turrets look out over the sea and give hints of the old majesty that once belonged to ancient Daalor. Within the walls, most of the city is a warren of narrow streets and alleys. Towering over the city is the demon lord's magnificent stone edifice, a symbol of its absolute dominion. To maintain control, the demon lord relies on a fanatical militia of warriors who fervently worship their demonic ruler and show no mercy to the city’s inhabitants. Despite the unpredictable dangers posed by its powerful demon ruler, fearless merchants still brave Bakus Shogr’s shores enticed by the allure of rare goods and exotic spices, some of which can be found nowhere else.
Jishrash Shogr, located on a hillside eight miles inland of the coastal city of Ruzar Shogr, is divided into upper and lower cities. The lower city, ancient and largely abandoned, lies in ruins. Within this area, numerous mines, both active and abandoned, delve deeply into the bedrock in search of precious adamantine ore. In these deep pits, the miners work under dangerous and oppressive conditions akin to slavery. Immediately above the old city lies a wide band of terraced land that contains the rich agricultural fields that grow the city’s food. Above these fields lies the newer upper city with its steep streets and poorly constructed stone buildings, clinging to the steep hillside. Above everything sits the demon lord's abode, hidden within an intricate underground labyrinth atop the hill.
Nearly hidden from view in a long cove, the city of Ruzar Shogr betrays its location by the thick plume of smoke that surrounds it. Located 6 miles south of Jishrash Shogr, Ruzar Shogr is the smallest of the three cities. This port city stands isolated from the outside due to its tyrannical demon overlord ruler. The opulent palace that serves as the demon's residence starkly contrasts with the squalor endured by the city's inhabitants. The skies above the city are darkened by a perpetual haze of choking smoke from the great coal burning smelters and forges that take raw ore and turn it into highly sought after adamantine. The entire city is covered in a thin layer of soot that has turned the city black and the air unsafe to breathe. The few outsiders who dare venture here, do so only for the valuable adamantine that is for sale.
