Mithlonsir River

Pronunciation: mith-LON-seer

Map Index: C-5, D-5

Location: East central Aorlan. The Mithlonsir River originates in the forested hills of Ceodaria, where numerous small streams converge to form its headwaters. The surrounding area is characterized by a tall deciduous forest of beech and maples, interspersed with small agricultural clearings around the tribal villages of Ceodaria. As the river continues its travels downstream in a southerly direction, it delineates the boundary between Ceodaria and the ancient forest of Mithtaur. Further south, the river dramatically widens as it is joined by the Amarthesir River flowing in from the west. This confluence marks the beginning of the boundary between the old forest of Mithtaur to the north and the foreboding dark forest of Tauramarth, The Forest of Doom to the south. Further to the southeast, the old great forests end and the river serves as the border between Denos to the north, and Pelarr to the south. The Mithlonsir River ends when it flows into the Ennishire Sound.

Physical Characteristics: Navigating the initial stretch of the Mithlonsir River is possible only by canoe, however, a profusion of swift rapids in many locations will necessitate many portages. Just downstream of the confluence with the Amarthesir River, the landscape begins to become more gently rolling and the rapids end. While small flat-bottomed boats can traverse these waters, few dare to use this part of the river for transportation due to the perilous nature of Tauramarth, The Forest of Doom. The forest, particularly hostile to humans, deters all but the bravest or most desperate travelers, making the Mithlonsir a route fraught with danger and mystery. All that changes downstream as the old forests end, and the river begins to flow through the small kingdoms of Denos and Pelarr. This final stretch of the river, finds itself heavily used by flat bottomed river boats moving trade goods to market.

Environment and Ecology: The river will freeze over during the cold winter months for short durations. Flows are lowest during the warm summer months but the river never dries up.

Hazards and Challenges: The stretches of the river that pass by Tauramarth, The Forest of Doom present clear dangers to anyone traveling on the river. Faeries of the Unseelie Court live in this area and will harrass travelers once they are discovered.
