Grunevor

Pronunciation: GREWN-nev-vor

Map Index: B-5, B-6

Location: Northeastern Aorlan, north of the Carakoros Range

Geography: Grunevor stretches out as a vast wilderness expanse of gently sloping grassy tundra, characterized by its frigid climate and unique geography. Vegetation in Grunevor desperately clings to the frost-bitten tundra. Shallow rooted shrubs and hardy grasses, specially adapted to the severe cold and short growing season, dominate the landscape, their tenacious roots delving into the thin soil above the permafrost. The presence of permafrost inhibits the growth of trees making the land mostly treeless.

Primary Population: Draorn
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None

Climate: This far northern land lies locked in ice for much of the year, its flat plains and rolling hills cloaked in a pristine mantle of snow and ice. This frozen realm experiences a harsh and bitter winter where temperatures steeply plummet, as the land is veiled in an icy stillness. With the pale winter sun rising only briefly each day, great icy winds roar across the frozen tundra during blinding snowstorms that sometimes rage for days.

Wildlife: With the onset of the long days of summer, a dramatic transformation takes place. The warming rays of the sun gradually thaw the ice and snow, unveiling vast hidden features such as shallow ponds and marshes. The summer tundra suddenly bursts to life as migratory birds and mammals descend upon the land from their winter refuges far to the south, drawn by the abundance of fresh green vegetation and newly formed water sources. The landscape transforms into a symphony of colors as wildflowers bloom, and great caribou herds traverse the plains in search of sustenance. Migratory waterfowl dot the skies, while small mammals scurry about in the undergrowth. In late summer, the days begin to shorten and the tundra of Grunevor becomes ever more still, as the abundance of migratory wildlife which filled the plains, begins to return to their winter homes.

Humanoids: Only the Draorn, a race of cold tolerant humanoids, dare to make Grunevor their summer home. These white fur covered humanoids use these ice free months to migrate from their homes in the Siaga Forest to hunt the large herds of caribou that fill the land.

Monsters: The tundra of Grunevor, for all its summer charm, is not without its dangers. In this world of extremes, the land harbors dangerous ancient creatures, relics of bygone eras. Well adapted to the cold unforgiving conditions, the ever-dangerous giant ice worms venture southward from their icy homes in Frosjord, The Frost Lands during the summer months in search of large prey.

History: Throughout its history, Grunevor has remained a pristine and untouched wilderness, scarcely explored by humans. It was during the cataclysmic event known as the Great Cataclysm that Grunevor faced its greatest challenge. The escarpment that borders the land acted as a natural barrier, partially shielding it from the cataclysm's worst effects. While the landscape bore the scars of upheaval, it persevered. The year-round ice and snow that once characterized its weather changed as the climate warmed considerably, exposing the soil to the sun's warming rays during the summer months.

Today: The land of Grunevor stands frozen for much of the year, yet the warm sun of summer brings a few months of ice free living to its flora and fauna. Great herds of caribou migrate into the land from the Siaga Forest each year, along with large flocks of waterfowl. Though short, the summer months are a peace filled time of year that allows nature time to recharge itself before the frosts of winter descend upon the land once again.
