"Destiny's Dwelling" is a saga of novels written and published by Zakina Falenmir that follows the adventures of a trio of young women that are recruited into the military and encounter more than they bargained for. Though it's never been directly stated, the series is recognized as a fictionalized account of Zakina's adventures with her friends. It was an immediate success upon its first publication. That popularity continued to soar when rumors persisted that the series was based off of true events. Well over a century since it first began, "Destiny's Dwelling" remains an important piece of the pop culture of United Lands of Caelsimil Teme-Rasadar and the surrounding nations, as well as the Isles of Basilla.
While the series may have relied heavily on Zakina's fame alone in the beginning, critics came to appreciate her actual skill with literature. "Destiny's Dwelling" tackles many themes, including those that show the darker side of life. The series never shies away from painting realistic depictions of war, childhood trauma, and loss. The relationships between characters grow naturally, experiencing their own ups and downs as the main characters are faced with increasingly difficult odds. The series has been adapted into countless plays and several unsuccessful musicals.
It's been the subject of in-depth analysis by fellow writers and scholars for its parallels to the war that eventually united Caelsimil and Teme-Rasadar. The Church of Our Lady recognizes the saga as an important piece of literature in the mythology surrounding their goddess, Industria, and her Saints.
With the knowledge Zakina has obtained through adventuring and from her ancestor, Lucky, she decided to write a comprehensive guide on the undead that adventurers might face. She spent years researching the subject with the help of Lucky and Jordeira, and published it a few years before departing to Basilla. It's her first work of non-fiction. With the amount of creatures covered in the beastiary, it was divided into three volumes.
The beastiary encourages readers to use their best judgement when dealing with the undead. While the majority of them may be hostile, there are intelligent undead that aren't aggressive and should be treated with respect. While not as popular as her Destiny's Dwelling series, Undead of the Realms is an accepted and widely appreciated guide for travelers, clerics, and anyone else who may encounter the undead in their day to day life.
Some of the undead catalogued in the beastiary are:
Attic Whisperers
Singing Sand Dogs
Wandering Guardians
Vara'kyn
Liches
After the party's adventures concluded and Zakina took Basilla's throne proper, she began gathering information on the fey that populated the Material Plane. The beastiary covers the most common ones, as well as more malicious creatures that may find their way into the world. It also details some of the Feywild itself, which she personally visited while adventuring. Any tricks that might be pulled by the fey are listed, as well as solutions to any deals or riddles they present. "Fey, Friends, and Foes" was written alongside her cousin, Catrina, with research provided by Elathera and Industria.
Some of the fey catalogued in the beastiary are:
Cat Sith
Sparklesprites
Mothmothers
Hags
A romantic drama, "A Song for You and I" depicts two soldiers from opposite sides of the war falling in love with one another. It's written across a trilogy of novels. Zakina has confirmed that the story is loosely inspired by her own relationship with Rikius.
A horror novel about the realization that the sun is an ancient, cosmic being. While praised by critics and fellow authors, "Beneath the Sun's Glare" is Zakina's least popular work to date. It was largely misunderstood by the general public and hated by some who believed that she was trying to curse the populace with occult knowledge. It's become a cult classic for younger generations.
A series of novels that follow the adventures of a group of kids trying to solve a mystery. Magic has suddenly disappeared and when it does sporadically reappear, catastrophe follows. The kids retain what little magic they know at their ages, but also have to rely on science and technology to unravel the problem. Zakina began "Legacy of Stardust" to teach children about the dangers of undisciplined magic and relying entirely on it to get by.
It also teaches children about scientific concepts in a way that's both fun to read and easy to comprehend. The series was written with Rikius' help and features some of his illustrations.
