Sparklesprites

A relatively unassuming fey, sparklesprites were once classed as a subtype of pixies. Further research revealed that these creatures were much weaker than pixies and also lacked a refined sapience. Sparklesprites are native to the Feywild and fill an ecological niche like that of butterflies on the Material Plane. In their search for nectar, their bodies collect pollen, which they then carry to other plants within their domain.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Sparklesprites have three toes and fingers on each of their six limbs respectively. They stand upright on two legs and have four, spindly arms that compliments their thin frames. On their backs are large, iridescent wings that look similar to stained glass. Sparklesprites have two round eyes that take up much of their face. Their eyes glow with a warm, dim light in the dark. A pair of short, threadlike antennae sprout from their heads.

Growth Rate & Stages

Compared to other kinds of fey, sparklesprites have an incredibly short lifespan. The soul energy contained in their tiny bodies is impressive; that energy returning to the Feywild upon their deaths to give life to the nature within. A sparklesprite approaching death has a different appearance depending on their surroundings. A dying sparklesprite that is still among a colony will brighten in color and a few days later, their wings will burst with a (harmless) prismatic explosion. The body left behind will turn to ash under the morning light.   Sparklesprites who have lost their colonies, no matter the reason for it, will wither away in the days leading to their deaths. Their natural colors will fade into a dull, dusty palette and their eyes will no longer glow. These sparklesprites don't experience a vibrant death, but rather decay like a forgotten flower would. Their wings fall away like wilted petals, leaving behind a skeletal body that crumbles into dust if disturbed.

Ecology and Habitats

Sparklesprites prefer to live deep within thickets of trees or near bodies of freshwater. They're also drawn to places where the veil between the Feywild and the Material Plane are thinnest, which sometimes causes colonies of sparklesprites to slip into the mortal world by complete accident. Those that reside on the Material Plane are reclusive and stick to the untamed wilds.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Sparklesprites feed off of insects, such as snails and worms. Nectar is another big part of their diet. To attract sparklesprites to an area, provided it isn't a busy environment, dishes of sugar water can be left out for them.

Behaviour

Given their fragile forms, sparklesprites are reclusive and work hard to isolate their colonies from outside species. Among their kind, they are friendly and loving, and often spend a lot of time dancing with others within their colony. Unfortunately, their dances are a dazzling display of lights, which tends to lead other creatures to them. Sparklesprites have since learned to manipulate the element of light to utilize it as a defense mechanism.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have the ability to detect corporeal creatures through the vibrations their movements cause. Sparklesprites have an excellent sense of sight and can cast their vision through the plants around them. They communicate with their kind through telepathy, but have no means of comfortably interacting with other species. In times of danger, sparklesprites can manipulate the light around them and cast minor illusions to distract predators.
