Jordeira Ferus

Lord of the Hunt Jordeira Brywen Ferus (a.k.a. Jordi, Jojo)

A former cultist and paladin of The Nameless One. He was captured and kept as an undead slave for a century. After his master was defeated and he was freed, he began to hunt down his master's abominations, as well as other monsters. Jordeira is the founder of Necropolis and a current member of The Grayveils.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Jordeira is extremely muscular with some body fat. His stamina is limitless because of his condition, and he's immune to disease. His build is unnaturally strong, but he carries himself with a certain level of grace that's unexpected for his size. He has a strong jawline and prominent, sharp facial features. His lips are thin, and he has a Roman nose that's crooked, having been broken many times. On his square chin, he has a dimple.   Jordeira's hulking stature makes him stick out like a sore thumb, that is, if the signs of undeath weren't identifying enough. The original skin on his body is branded with runes associated with the Nameless One. After the god's defeat, the runes now glow with Industria's magic instead. A small eye within a pyramid marks his left hip, a symbol of Iolond, who has ties to his elder god. Some of his skin is stitched together like a patchwork quilt.   He has a determined gait with long strides, and his posture is quite rigid, like that of a dedicated soldier. Jordeira has a semi-permanent scowl affixed to his face, making him appear intimidating and unapproachable. It's difficult to find things that fit, so he often wears armor in place of clothes. When he's able to find a tailor that will work with him, Jordeira prefers to wear elaborate, gothic attire.   Jordeira does his best to maintain personal hygiene despite being undead. He interacts with mortals daily and needs to maintain a presentable appearance. To hide the vague smell of rot, he lines his armor and clothes with dried herbs and flowers.

Special abilities

  • He can absorb the essence of spirits and haunts that are capable of rejuvenating themselves, which prevents them from doing so.
  • He can temporarily grow in size, gaining even more strength to defeat his opponents.
  • Immune to mind-affecting and death effects, disease, paralysis, and poison. He doesn't need to sleep or sustain his body through mortal means.
  • Easily able to recognize undead disguising themselves as mortals.
  • Can use opponents as weapons, dealing massive damage to them, their allies, or any objects around them.

Specialized Equipment

  • Silverlight: A powerful and enchanted vorpal blade. It hits much harder than the average sword and cuts through flesh without any resistance.
  • Tartarus: A jabberwock claw that has been affixed to a 15-foot adamantine chain. This weapon can be used to grapple a target, acting as if a dimensional anchor has been placed on them.
  • Daywalker Ring: His wedding band that he received from Lucky. Enchanted with a "daywalker" spell, allowing him to take on the appearance of the living while also granting him false signs of life.
  • Permission to Hit: Gifted to him by Industria. It's a single use item that allows him to swing on Rikius or Zakina, but only if it would be funny to do so.

Personal history

In the ruined streets of Felidae, a country that died as quickly as it arrived, Jordeira was orphaned at a young age. Civil war and plague thinned the living until silence ruled the alleys. Jordeira's parents died from their ailments, leaving him responsible for his younger sister. He did everything in his power to shield her from reality. If Yondira fell ill, Jordeira would steal medicine. If she were hungry, he would find them something to eat. Whatever she needed, he got for her. If Yondira was happy, then Jordeira was satisfied.   The pair were plucked from the streets by the charming leader of the Disciples of Ruin. Madeleine Ferus was dressed in fine robes, and her voice was like a siren's call. The siblings were raised in a cult that worshiped an elder god known as the Nameless One. Jordeira fell in line immediately, fearing that if he didn't, his sister would suffer for it. He shouldered Madeleine's abuse, becoming her favorite student, though she treated him as something between a weapon and a toy. Jordeira was next in line to become the Nameless One's mouthpiece, the Speaker of Shadows. For his dedication, he was stripped down and branded with runes that bound him to the god's will.   As his power grew, Madeleine knew her reign would be over soon. She became withdrawn, fearing her inevitable death at Jordeira's hands. As a last resort to keep her position as the Speaker of Shadows, she sent Jordeira and Yondira on a suicide mission framed as a test of their faith. They were to track down an elusive lich, Ariamis Madan, and kill him for hoarding knowledge that once belonged to the cult. Tracking him down was easier than anticipated. The pair was captured, tortured, and experimented on daily. Jordeira couldn't stand to see his sister suffering, and mercy killed her. It was the first time in a long time that she looked truly at peace.   Jordeira believed he freed her from her torment, but unknowingly signed her soul over to the Nameless One, who fed on the souls of its followers. As Yondira died, she took Jordeira's will to fight. He sought death again and again, but Ariamis resurrected him every time. First, it was with spellwork, and then it was alchemy. Ariamis hoped that using alchemy would lead to stronger and smarter undead. An alchemical ichor would flow through their veins, allowing their bodies to heal naturally. Ariamis was building an army, and Jordeira was his finest work: a protector of his secrets and an executioner that couldn't be killed.   Then came the heroes, a trio that traveled to Nevarre with one purpose: to slay Ariamis. One of them, Lucky Kociak, caught Jordeira off guard. Rather than harm him, they asked him how he was doing. It was a brief moment of kindness that forever changed him. Ariamis' power was great, but the trio's power was greater. His phylactery was destroyed, and shortly afterwards, the rest of his being was gone too. Freedom was overwhelming, and Jordeira contemplated taking his own life one final time. He didn't find peace, but he found someone who needed it. Kataledaris Amall, one of Ariamis' many victims. She reanimated under mysterious circumstances and was just as lost as he was.   He took her under his wing, and together, they destroyed what remained of Ariamis' abominations. Jordeira found a new purpose in hunting monsters. One of his hunts reunited him with Lucky. He never forgot their kindness, and when it blossomed into something deeper, he was undone. Lucky's feelings were mutual, and despite being a lich, the two started a relationship. In the years that followed, Jordeira traveled to the Masoud Desert to hunt multiple liches. If he couldn’t reclaim his humanity, he could at least choose what kind of monster he’d be.   He befriended Industria Cellini, who welcomed him with open arms. Even when she learned of his past, she remained a constant in his life. It was with her help that he walked the path of redemption and became a guardian of the vulnerable. He married Lucky, and the two went on to found Necropolis, a haven for intelligent undead who wished to have a better life. Jordeira opened the Kronia Academy for Hunters nearby, where future monster hunters, both mortal and immortal, are trained.   Before Industria left the Material Plane, she brought Jordeira one last gift. She gave him an infant, one of the first Duskwalkers born of her divine craft. Jordeira accepted her gift and became the proud father of Aeki Ferus.

Morality & Philosophy

  • Act first and ask questions later.
  • Time is always of the essence.
  • Greed is an unchecked corruption that people will do anything to fulfill.
  • Honesty is the best policy, even if the truth hurts.
  • Selfishness is not inherently bad, but never overindulge in it.
  • Protect those who can't protect themselves.
  • Freedom is a right, not a luxury.
  • Take responsibility for your actions.

Taboos

The use of mind-altering magic, bringing harm to those who are unable to defend themselves, using necromancy for corrupt reasons, expecting monetary gain for good deeds.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

He's pushed forward by a desire to seek redemption for the atrocities he's committed in his life. Though a noble goal on the outside, it's done selfishly so the world stops viewing him as a monster. He's happy to help those in need and will do so for nothing in return, but all of his work leads to him killing something or someone.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Jordeira is a surprisingly talented craftsman, his specialties being traps and toys for kids. He can craft poisons as well, his knowledge coming from his former master who was skilled with anything alchemical. Occult knowledge is something he has and knows how to find, but he's reluctant to do so because of his past. He's an incredibly intelligent man and uses that skill with hands-on work such as engineering. And when somebody needs an intimidating presence for whatever reason, he's the right guy for the job.   He has terrible social skills even when he makes an effort to communicate like a functioning member of society. He has an awful grasp on languages outside of what he's already learned. Animals are something he's not very fond of and as such, he can't handle them well at all. This leads to frequent attacks from the local wildlife because of his threatening presence, but domesticated pets tend to gravitate towards him once they sense his discomfort. While smart, he's not a wise man and that leads to reckless behavior and plans that don't really amount to anything.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes daggers, physical fights, romance novels, ravens, and puzzles. Dislikes greed, corrupt authority figures, magic, religion, and being embarrassed. Favorite colors are moss green, canary yellow, and ruby red. His favorite scents are rosemary, amber, patchouli, and oak moss.

Virtues & Personality perks

Jordeira is an incredibly intelligent man when it comes to traditional forms of education. He isn't materialistic in the slightest, so he has no problem giving his wealth away to those who need it. While he's capable of formulating plans and thinking strategically, he prefers to act spontaneously for the sheer thrill of it. He's always chasing the high from an adrenaline rush, so he's not the sort to turn down a mission even if it has several risks involved. Jordeira, despite the tough exterior and blunt honesty, is sensitive and in tune with his softer side. He's a hopeless romantic and quite corny about it.

Vices & Personality flaws

Jordeira is temperamental and it doesn't take much to offend him. His sensitivity is both a gift and a curse, so while he has no problems being honest with others, he doesn't always appreciate their honest opinions of him. His moodiness can lead him to be callous towards others and he doesn't bite his tongue for anyone aside from a few trusted individuals. Jordeira is oftentimes arrogant and sometimes downright ignorant, only adding to the prickly nature others see. Due to his disdain for planning ahead, his attempts to find some kind of thrill in life are reckless and he tends to jump to violence too quickly.

Personality Quirks

  • Tilts his head slightly when studying people, a habit leftover from his years guarding Ariamis.
  • Pauses before entering temples or holy places, visibly uncomfortable.
  • Sometimes forgets to blink for long stretches when lost in thought.
  • Keeps his weapons unnaturally clean; the act borders on ritual.
  • Keeps a single coin from every place he’s visited, polishing them when homesick.
  • Runs his fingers over the runes on his skin, checking that they're still there.
  • Uses dry, morbid humor as a coping mechanism.
  • Avoids mirrors and reflective surfaces whenever possible.
  • Touches others gently, as if afraid they might break.
  • Freezes when someone thanks or praises him, unsure how to respond.
  • Refuses to sit with his back to a door or open window.

Hygiene

Jordeira does his best to keep his hygiene at decent levels, especially since he's a walking corpse that interacts with mortals on a daily basis. To hide the vague smell of rot, he lines his armor and clothes with dried herbs and flowers.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Family Ties

Religious Views

Jordeira has an incredibly complicated relationship with religion. Years as a paladin of the Nameless One have taught him that the gods are fickle, selfish, and manipulative beings. While he'd like to be spiritual for a sense of personal comfort, he's turned his back on the concept of organized religion.

Social Aptitude

Jordeira is unapproachable by a majority of people. He has a demeanor that makes him seem cold and when given the chance, he tends to prove that with his painfully honest opinions. He has no qualms about hurting someone's feelings because he isn't comfortable with lying to their face. He can be polite and well-mannered when it's called for, but for the most part, he says whatever is on his mind regardless of the consequences.

Hobbies & Pets

His hobbies include puzzles, gardening, trap crafting, and toy making. He has a single cat named Sprinkles, who mainly belongs to his daughter, Bella.

Speech

Voice Claim: Julian Ovenden
  • Jordeira has a posh English accent and speaks formally. His pitch is nasally with a bit of rasp and his manner of speaking tends to sound pretentious. He doesn't curse often, but when he does, it's usually paired with an immature insult or a hard hit to somebody's ego.
