Victor Thomason

Victor Calvin Thomason was born April 2, 1949, as the only child of Calvin and Theresa Thomason. He would work a variety of jobs at Birch Harbor Tool & Die, purchasing the company in 1988. He would use this as the foundation to grow what became Thomason Holdings. Though successful in business, he is better remembered for acting as a surrogate father for his grandchildren Andrew and Mark Thomason, and as stepfather for his great-grandchildren.

Personal Life

Victor would grow up in the wake of his grandfather Theodore squandering the entire family fortune that had been raised by Daniel Thomason during the industrial revolution. Calvin was extremely frugal and was known as a hard worker, traits he would pass on to his son. He would also push the importance of family with a certain irony, since Calvin had sued and disowned his own father in 1939.   He would develop a number of odd quirks in his childhood, including the tendency to lick random objects. Later in life he was able to accurately determine metal types by taste. Like his son Paul would later, Victor started work at Birch Harbor Tool & Die at the age of 16. Calvin personally drove him to Birch Harbor Credit Union to open his own savings account with his first paycheck.   He would meet his future wife Anna Howell in 1968, as she dropped a carton of milk at the grocery store. Discovering that her parents had just moved to town, Victor offered to show them around. He would borrow Calvin’s car, driving them around and taking them to dinner. Anna would later joke that it was the strangest first date she had ever had, with her father in the front seat and her parents being with them the entire time. The pair would be married two months later.   Calvin gave Victor the old family homestead as a wedding present, which Victor accepted far more graciously than Anna did as the house had sat vacant since 1944 and had last been renovated in 1912. They would live with Calvin until 1972, giving birth to their son Roger in 1970 in the dining room because Calvin did not see a reason to go to the hospital and have to pay a bill.   The new family would finally move into the homestead in 1972 when renovations were finally to Anna’s satisfaction. Victor would purchase a new 1973 Buick Centurion, a car he would drive for the rest of his life. In 1975, Paul Thomason would be delivered in the front seat of the car, as the birth came so quickly that they were unable to reach the hospital in time.   He would purchase Birch Harbor Tool & Die in 1988, mortgaging the house, using their entire savings, and borrowing money from their parents to do so. Everyone would comment that this was the day Victor Thomason the businessman began. Shedding his shoulder length blonde hair for a close-cropped style, and later adding a beard, Victor would take on a professional, yet fatherly appearance to further the business.   Victor was home the morning of the explosion that killed both Roger and Janet Thomason, grabbing Mark in an attempt to keep him from witnessing the event. Calvin did not think Paul was capable of raising the twins and urged Victor to do this himself. Victor had confidence in Paul, and reminded Calvin that they would still be living right across the street, essentially keeping the family under his supervision. Calvin himself would die of a heart attack on December 26, 1997, while shoveling his neighbor’s sidewalk. Victor was forced to sell Calvin’s house and store the furnishings in the homestead, so he did not have spare bedrooms at the time.   Anna would be diagnosed with cancer in 1998, leaving her teaching job at Birch Harbor High School that year. She would die at home in 2002, leaving Victor devastated. When Mark Thomason ran away in 2003, Victor would spend hours every day looking for him. Following a lead in 2004, Victor would find Mark huddled under a railroad bridge outside Detroit, muttering incoherently in drug withdrawals. He would visit Mark every day during his rehabilitation.   While treating both twins equally, he would keep a closer eye on Mark and support him in different ways than he did Andrew. Discovering that Mark was building computers and selling them online, Victor helped him set up Thomason Computing, paying the first year’s rent on a storefront and helping equip it. He would purchase the building in 2008, providing an apartment for Mark above the store, something he did not do for Andrew who was far more independent.   With increased revenue from Mykentian contracts, Victor would purchase Randolph Thomason’s Georgian manor house in 2012, only moving in after renovations were completed in 2017. The following year Andrew and Mark would travel to Anatos, Mark deciding to leave Xavier and Aiden with Victor. Gavin and Leon would join them in 2020 when Sofia Thomason wanted to devote more time to her struggling singing career. Victor took them in, and never spoke of Sofia again unless he was asked directly.   Victor would raise his four great-grandchildren as if they were brothers, rather than cousins. While he was close with all of them, he would become closest to Leon, who would later comment that Victor was the only father he really had.   The meeting where the plan to confront the eventual return of the Enmalex was developed in 2031 in Victor’s home. He would be instrumental in getting Andrew and Mark to take the plan proposed by Aiden and Leon seriously, as well as warning Andrew that he had to fulfill his end of the agreement. Following the departure of Xavier, Gavin and Aiden, Victor would focus all his attention on Leon, much to the disappointment of Paul. Receiving word of Aiden’s death, Victor became a recluse, rarely attending board meetings and only speaking regularly with Leon.   Victor would die early in the morning of October 21, 2032. His death was initially kept a secret to avoid a panic in the stock market, with even Leon not being informed by Paul until minutes before the official announcement. Leon would not arrive in Birch Harbor until late in the evening, many speculating that Paul had deliberately delayed his arrival until he was firmly established as president of Thomason Holdings.

Business Career

Legacy

Victor Thomason would be remembered as a shrewd, yet fair businessman who treated his employees as an extension of his family. Few would understand his pivotal role in the upbringing of some of the most consequential Hilts of the Mykentian Republic.   Spoilers for Enmalex Wars, Book 5
On April 2, 2448 (990 MY), Leon Thomason would issue an imperial edict declaring both Victor’s grave and the Georgian house as national landmarks of the Terran Imperium. He would also create the Victor Thomason Award for Achievements in Science, awarded based on the value of new technology in improving lives. As part of the Thomason Group corporate campus, the Victor Thomason Innovation Center would provide resources to anyone who needed support or facilities to pursue their goals.
