Leon Thomason

Leon Victor Thomason was born September 2, 2013 (679 MY), the younger son of Andrew and Sofia Thomason. He would become known for his skill in business, transforming Thomason Holdings from a national corporation to an interstellar power in its own right. He would later become one of the founding oligarchs of the Terran Imperium, where he would serve as Consul of Internal Affairs and later as Acting Prime Minister. During the First Enmalex War he would suddenly reappear, resuming his role as President and CEO of Thomason Holdings, restructuring the company into Thomason Group.

Personal Life

Very few records or personal anecdotes remain of Leon’s childhood, as he made an extensive effort to forget that period of his life. Sofia Thomason was an aspiring singer who would often spend months at a time away pursuing her career, leaving the children alone with Andrew. Not a naturally warm person, Andrew was considered by most to be a strict and demanding father. Where Gavin was able to develop an outward façade of polite pleasantry to hide his emotions, Leon lacked the natural charisma his brother possessed and exhibited many signs of anti-social behavior.   Andrew thought that the same pressures he applied to himself could be placed on his children as well. Both his sons would remark that no accomplishment they achieved seemed satisfactory, and they were always urged to do better. As the General Manager of Thomason Heavy Industries, Andrew would often host functions at home, and during these events he would often include his children. It would later be commented that this was the only time Andrew actually appeared to show any warmth towards his children.   This resulted in Leon becoming increasingly withdrawn, with his brother being the only person he could actually talk to freely. Frequently given puzzles and simple math problems even before formal schooling, Leon took up the unusual hobby of balancing his father’s detailed accounting books. He would later comment that he did this because it was the only time he would be left alone, and it was impossible to find fault with a balanced ledger.

Victor Thomason

In 2018 (683 MY) Andrew and Mark Thomason would travel to Anatos. Where Mark left his sons Aiden and Xavier with Victor Thomason, Andrew left his sons with Sofia. Initially she would hire sitters to watch over the children while she was away, but this became impossible to maintain, and in 2020 (684 MY), Gavin and Leon joined their cousins living with Victor.   Unlike their father, Victor was outwardly warm, compassionate, and supportive. Where Gavin could function in society, he found that Leon had withdrawn so much that he rarely spoke, even to family. As he entered grade school, Leon was quickly singled out by the other children as a target due to his reclusive behavior and his thick glasses. The only person who openly stood up for him was his cousin Aiden, while Gavin often tried to distract the bullies with his talent for mimicry and storytelling. Aiden would become Leon’s physical protector, rushing to meet him and walk home together after school.   Victor would be accused of all but spoiling his great grandchildren, allowing them to pursue whatever interests they had with little restraint. Unable to focus among his more boisterous cousins, Leon would often do his homework in Victor’s office at Thomason Holdings, eventually getting his own desk in the corner where he could do his homework. Victor would often allow him to sit in on board meetings, where he would sit quietly listening or reading. Many would later conclude that Victor was mentoring Leon at a very early age, but it was far more likely that he simply did not want Leon spending all his time alone.

Eton College

Leon would comment later in his life that he was a normal person in a family of geniuses and had to push himself harder in order to stand out, yet even he recognized that Victor spent a disproportionate amount of time with him when compared to his brother and cousins. His exceptional grades, combined with the intensifying bullying led Victor to reluctantly allow him to apply to Eton College in 2027 (689 MY).   It was at Eton that Leon finally found a place he fit in. No longer the target of bullying and living in a more structured environment allowed him to relax somewhat and find new interests. He also embraced the far more sophisticated European culture and the British calm reserve. It would be during his time at Eaton that Leon developed the aristocratic, slightly English accent he would later be known for.   He would prove so successful at Eton that in 2028 he would become one of the King’s Scholars, also joining the Eton rowing team and participating in cricket and football games. In 2030 he became the first person to score a goal in the Eton Wall Game since 1909.   Leon would develop a close friendship with Itsuke Hidaka, son of the then Prime Minister of Japan. The two would agree to attend college together later.

The Anatos Mission

Andrew and Mark Thomason would return in 2031 (962 MY) with information detailing the threat that would later be recognized as the Enmalex. Though their understanding of the situation was vague, they had enough information to conclude that there was indeed a threat. A family meeting held at Victor’s house would lay out the plan that ultimately saw the restoration of the Mykentian Republic and the thorough preparation for the Enmalex War.   Leon, home on spring break from Yale College, joined Aiden in promoting this plan over the objections of Andrew.

Reluctant Scion

With the death of Aiden in 2031, and Victor in 2032, Leon was suddenly left at the mercy of the trust that Andrew had left for him. Initially under Victor’s administration, the eleven billion dollar trust was now under Paul Thomason’s control, and stipulated that it was not to be released to Leon until he gained a senior management position in Thomason Holdings. Paul Thomason would consequently do everything in his power to postpone that event, characterizing Leon as a rich, spoiled child who’d had everything handed to him. Through the use of threats and coercion, Paul forced Leon to do as he demanded or risk losing the trust. He then made sure to make that loss as complete as possible, even going so far as to have Leon’s clothing listed as company property. He would force Leon to move from the newly renovated apartment in the building owned by Thomason Holdings in Cambridge and into the unrenovated ground floor unit. It would only be the intervention of Itsuke Hidaka and his father that allowed Leon to move in with him.   In addition to attending college for economics, business administration and communication, Leon found himself suddenly in the position of company spokesman. Paul also forced him to abandon tennis and take up boxing in an attempt to break his cultured, European veneer. Leon would be the subject of a concerted marketing campaign by Thomason Holdings as its future director. The campaign would simultaneously present Leon as the future of the company and as the world’s most eligible bachelor, playing on the vast fortune he stood to inherit. Paul would arrange acting lessons for Leon to prepare him for his role in the future.

Career

President of Thomason Holdings

Leon made a number of important decisions immediately upon becoming President of Thomason Holdings. One of the longest lasting of these decisions was to spin off the development of jump navigation systems from Thomason Computing into a new division, Thomason Navigation. He would appoint Itsuke Hidaka to the position of CEO of Thomason Navigation while retaining the company presidency for himself. At the time this was seen as a bold move, as Hidaka had no experience in business and had only recently graduated from Oxford with a doctorate in astrophysics. However, he had done his doctoral dissertation on the possibility of using the Alpha System to revise jump equations to improve jump accuracy and efficiency, and would now have the ability to put this into practice.
