Dragons

Dragons are not nearly as old as the Caelestia, but are still a very old species. They evolved into sentience a few billion years after the creation of the Bulla Rimulae (The Solar System), with the help of the Caelestia. As one of the first and the oldest intelligent species to inhabit Ossium, they have some stories to tell. Dragons are as diverse, beautiful, and magical as Ossium itself. They are so perfectly in tune with nature, that it has been widely debated if they share spirits with the The Living Forest. This theory is supported by the fact that Dragons are the only intelligent species to have the universal gift of Auditus (The Living Forest). The only other beings known to have this skill are the Caelestia. Dragons have always been gentle, benevolent, and wise creatures, dedicated to the persut of knowledge, art, and culture. But after The War of Tragedy, they became extreme pacifists as well.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragons average 8-10 ft at maturity (25), but will continue to grow much larger over their immense life spans. The oldest dragons average well into the 5-7 hundreds, and average 20-30 ft at the shoulder.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dragons are incubated for 10 months in egg clutches. The number of eggs per clutch can range from 1-6, 6 being the highest number of eggs ever recorded. Dragon eggs range from 2-3ft in size, and infant dragons range from 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 ft at hatching, depending on the size of their egg and how well they were incubated. After hatching, their development is similar to a humans, being infants for 5 years, and hatchlings for 10 years after. Around age 13, a hatchling starts to develop their flight muscles, and can engage in gliding and small bursts of flight. Around 15, they gain true flying abilities. The average hatchling can range from 4-5 ft at age 13, and 5-6 at 15. From 15 to 25, they are considered young adults, and at 25 reach maturity. Once they reach 25 and average 8-10 ft, they will slowly grow larger over the years, until their death. Most Dragons can reproduce once they reach 25, but due to their long lifespans most dragons won't reproduce until they are well into their 80's or older. Dragons at 25, while they technically can reproduce, and still considered children of a sort until they reach their 50's, at which point they reach a sort of threshhold of growth and development.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dragons are omnivorous, with a mainly meat based diet. They don't eat every day like humans, and only need to eat 2-3 time a week, and the amount of food varies from age group and developmental stage. Dragons used to forage, but once they started forming small villages and settlements, they turned to agriculture and livestock keeping.

Biological Cycle

The average lifespan for dragons ranges from 500-700, the oldest dragon being 832 at the time of her natural death.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Dragons are incredibly intelligent, but unlike humans, have never had the desire to form governments or large scale societies. Dragons mostly live in small communities. They maintain connection with dragons from other communites often though, and will travel from community to community to trade, visit freinds or family, or just for fun. About every 5-10 years, the elders of each community will come together on Nota Insula, and exchange news, talk of hatchings, discuss possible problems, and share knowledge.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dragons exist in all parts of the world, and their overall attributes vary depending on the habitat and weather patterns of said habitat.

Average Intelligence

Dragons are highly intelligent organisms, dedicated to the pursut of knowledge and art.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

Dragons can be born one of 3 sexes. Male, female, and hermaphraditic. Male and female dragons reproduce similarly to humans, with the female laying eggs/an egg. Both the male and female dragon in a pair will contribute to the incubation of a clutch of eggs. Hermaphradotic dragons have 3 variations. Female leaning, male leaning, or gender neutral. Female leaning means a dragons has the ability to lay eggs, with some male characteristics, and male leaning means a dragons has the ability to inpregnate a female or female leaning dragon. Gender neutral dragons are often either unable to reproduce, or need other gender neutral dragons to reproduce with. Dragons are very unbiased towards gender, and have no cultural gender roles.

Courtship Ideals

Dragons are almost universally pansexual, and will form longstanding relashonships with other dragons, regardless of differing features based on geographic location.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Dragons are highly respectful of nature, and live a 'natural' lifestyle, or very wild one at least.

Common Taboos

Dragons are a mostly peacful species, but ater the The War of Tragedy they became extreme pacifists as well. After the War they also distances themselves from most human kingdoms, and only engage on a personal or small scale level with people.

Historical Figures

Paelle, discovory of Bonding Spells. Shaska and Elitza, the first Dragon & Rider to be Bonded.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Soon after the Celestia bridged the gap between Dragons and newly evolved Humans, they began to be partner species. Coexisting both culturally and socially. It was almost inevitable that Dragons and Humans would become Dragons & Riders. The first Dragons & Riders were revolutionary, and the relashonship between them only got stronger when Shaska and Elitza became the first Dragon & Rider to Bond, using a Bonding Spells.
