Family History

  The Moreland’s can trace their family history on St Lawrence to the late 2300's, the planet on which they made their initial fortune. The family still reveres the name of Alexandria “Alex” Moreland, who came to St Lawrence with a backpack and fifteen adjusted dollars in her pocketas the family story goes.   She worked her ranch hard, becoming a wealthy cattle woman on St Lawrence and raising six children. She was also involved in St Lawrence’s politics and was twice elected to the St Lawrence colonial legislature.   Her son, Jayson, took the ranch and gambled it to create a business. He sold off the ranches and cattle to set up a construction company, Hinterland. This was his life’s work and Jayson, who was a skilled but hard driving and cold man, turned the company into a hundred million adjusted dollar business before he died.   Jayson handed the company on to Rheon, his son who inherited a business that was on the up with an excellent reputation. Rheon, a bold dreamer with political aspirations, set his sights on taking the company out to the wider Terran sphere into the Empire. After twenty years of trying, he finally made a breakthrough, taking out a huge loan that allowed Hinterland to expand out across all of Terran space.   Rheon was also heavily involved in politics on St Lawrence, generally supporting the Libertarian Party. He was elected Mayor of New Helsinki and had thought about a potential run at Governor but the rise of the Home-Steaders and then VAIL’s takeover ended those ambitions, Rheon fell ill in the 2530’s and handed the family business over to Lysander.   Govenor Lysander Moreland took Hinterland from a valuation of 10 billion adjusted dollars to over a 100 billion adjusted dolars, becoming the largest single construction company in Terran space. He merged the company with Capek to expand the companies reach and market share, along with creating divisons for retail, services and shipbuilding, giving the company a varied income stream. He was active in politics, first as a supporter of the Libertarians on St Lawrence, then as a member of Valiant before being instramental in merging the moderate Val party members with the RCP. He ran for and won the Govenorship of St Lawrence twice.   Govenor Pierce Moreland spent his early career as General Counsel for Hinterland, helping to put together many of the deals that drove the companies rapid growth. He started his political career in 2560, working as a speech writer on his fathers campaign and later that year was elected on the Valiant 2560 GA list. He joined the Judiciary Committee and was eventually named the chairman of the newly formed and highly influential committee that will be looking at the long-term future of the Minimum Wage. He was elevated to the post of Foreign Secretary in 2570 as a part of the “Unity” government lead by President Aston Groff and then moved to the Treasury by President Henderson Loke as Treasury Secutary. He chose to run for Governor of St Lawrence to try and see off a challenge from Ravenheart and their separatist allies in the 2580 election period, successfully. He declined to run for a second term, instead chosing to found the United Worlds Alliance to advocate for the Republic against the SWA, he was know to deeply dissapointed by other Federalist parties and leading figures at the time. He passed away in 2590.  

Business Ventures

House Moreland founded major construction firm Hinterland Investment Corporation (HIC), which later merged with Capek R&D to form Hinterland Capek Projects in 2575.   In 2580 they founded Nutragen as a vechile for a new product developed by the Moreland Institute for Advanced Production, Kelp0.   House Moreland also purchased Tycho Information Systems from House Ishida.   In 2585 they expanded their portfolio with Starlight Mining, MediAlliance Group, Corestone Banking & Investment, Prime Pulse Entertainment and OmniGoods Galactic as part of the Rygar charter to provide support to the colonisation of the world.    

Political Interests

  House Moreland were initially politically independent, before Governor Lysander Moreland joined the Valiant Party. After the 2560 election, they joined the Republican Centrist Party, alongside the rest of the moderate wing of Valiant.   Grand Duchess Lysa Moreland was the hereditary governor of the world of Rygar, under the title of Grand Duchess.   Duchess Lysa formally left the RCP after the 2610 election. Prior to this it was noted in the press that the Duchess had conducted a number of meetings and visits with more conservative families, include a state visits with the Kranes. She founded the Imperial Party in the leadup for the 2620 election.
