Greyback Ogre

The Greyback Ogre is a species of Ogre that dwell in the mountains and hills around the city of Solova in the northern Velvet Coast. Named for their coarse, stone-grey hides, they are to be hulking remnants of Harlak's legions. Though rarely encountered on the road, encounters usually result in wanton destruction.

Basic Information

Anatomy

  • Size: Between 9–12 feet tall, weighing near half a ton.
  • Skin: Grey, mottled, and ridged like stone, providing natural camouflage in cliffs.
  • Musculature: Immensely strong, though cumbersome; their blows can shatter doors or snap oxen in half.
  • Head: Sloping forehead, small sunken eyes, tusk-like lower canines.
  • Hands: Huge, calloused, often wielding crude clubs, uprooted trees, or hurled boulders.
  • Endurance: Possess thick bones and redundant muscle layers, able to sustain wounds that would kill lesser beasts.
  • Growth Rate & Stages

  • Infancy: Born as pale-skinned, malformed infants that grow rapidly.
  • Year 1–3: Child-sized but ravenous, often killed by their own parents. Survivors reach the size of men within three years.
  • Year 4–6: Adolescent ogres are already a caravan’s nightmare, but lack full muscle mass.
  • Year 7+: Fully grown “Greybacks,” reaching peak size and strength.
  • Lifespan: Rarely exceed 20 years, as hunger, wounds, or the Pass Guard eventually bring them down.
  • Ecology and Habitats

  • Habitat: Favor cliffside caves and ravines where they can descend suddenly upon travelers.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; eat livestock, mountain goats, roots, and carrion. Folk tales accuse them of cannibalism, though chroniclers debate this.
  • Territory: Wide roaming, but usually one Greyback per valley or pass. They mark their domain with smashed cairns and piles of bones.
  • Predators: Few creatures challenge them. Cliff Wyverns harass but rarely engage directly.
  • Behaviour

  • Solitary: Rarely seen in groups, though some records tell of two ogres sharing a territory in particurarly harsh winters.
  • Raiding Instincts: Drawn to noise and scent of food — caravans, livestock pens, or battlefield camps.
  • Simple Cunning: Though dull-witted, they know to block mountain roads or hurl stones from heights to scatter defenders.
  • Aggression: They fight until slain or driven off by overwhelming force. Retreat is almost unknown.
  • Corpse-Maul: Often linger after slaughter, mauling corpses and smashing wagons long after prey is dead.
