Human
Humans are a diverse ethnic supergroup that is found in all known corners of the Material Plane. Of the three initial sentients created by the gods, the human species has existed in their current form for the longest time. In those millennia, they have developed a myriad of cultures across the world.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Classical human languages varied more widely across Belcantas than most others. The initial two language groups, Dovrian and Achlyssian, diverged sometime in the Age of Audacity, and developed from there into several languages each, including Kommesch, Gaenoan, and Maqámat. After knowledge of Common was granted to all mortals in the Litigation of Flames, it quickly flourished across the world, but particularly in the human-led imperial unifications of the Kingdom of Dreibach and the Aquatic Kingdoms. Today, it is the primary human language by far, with nearly all others falling into complete disuse.
Culture and cultural heritage
The most beloved human stories tend to focus on a small group of main characters who forge relationships through a common goal. Tales of revolutions, successful adventuring parties, and struggles against supernatural evil are particularly popular.
Shared customary codes and values
Human culture values open exchange and communication with one's neighbors. They have a reputation for being skilled with trade and commerce. Human culture lacks the tendency towards superiority complexes that many other species develop, and tend to treat their fellow humanoid species as equals, with only rare exceptions. Many regard humans as exceptionally talkative and prone to hyperbole.
Common Myths and Legends
Humans are said to have been created by Fricka in the early 2000s TRQ. While early dwarves resembled ruminants and early gnomes resembled flightless avian dinosaurs, the mother-goddess modeled humans after herself—the form they still hold today.
The most favored pantheon among modern human communities is the Olympian Dynasty, whose major gods are almost always depicted as human. The gods of the Young Dynasty have gained favor throughout the last century as well, particularly in the Central Duchy and Eastern Duchy of the Dreibach Empire.
Major organizations
Important human rulers and dynastic lines of the Age of Complexity include:
- House Almaviva of Cantonova, rulers of the city since the War of Great Sorrow
- The Ferhauss line, which united the feuding houses of Neukomm, Mordeinkin, Gundheith, and Breughal under the banner of Felix I
- The Rex Aetherum, Rex Marinus, and Rex Terrestrus of the Three Brothers Isles
- The Ayeeda Dynasty of Sona, high regent of the Aquatic Kingdoms
- The defunct royal dynasties of Voli, Cape Hildegard, and the Kingdom of Dreibach
