The War of the Titans
The War of the Titans was an ancient war between dragons and giants that lasted from about 8,000 to 5,000 years ago. It began after the creation of giants by the goddess Unterana in order to challenge the dragons dominance over the material plane. The war came to an end after the Battle of the Skyfield in the Highsong Mountains, when the dragon god Deyallor killed Unterana. The war led to a dramatic decline in the populations of both dragons and giants, allowing smaller species such as humans, orcs, elves, dwarves, and goblinoids to rise in prominence.
Since their creation by the twin gods Deyallor and Dakath 5,000 years earlier, the metallic and chromatic dragons had fought amongst themselves in what was known as The Dragon War. Though the population dragons declined significantly over the course of the war, they were even by its end dramatically more numerous than today. As they were huge and, at the time, far more organized than their modern descendants, the dragons were unchallenged as the rampaged across the world in huge flocks, destroying much of what came before.
The godess Unterana wanted a piece the world, then dominated by the creations of Deyallor and Dakath. She endevoured to create a species large and powerful enough to challenge the dragons. She therefore created the giants, and led them as they attacked the dragons. The giants did well at first against the dragons, who were still divided and fighting amongst themselves. The giants quickly drove the dragons from the elemental planes, where they had once been common, and built large cities and fortresses that were difficult for the dragons to attack. Unterana herself engaged actively in the war, making the giants seem impossible and greatly annoying the other gods.
The dragons were soon forced to stop there conflict or face extinction. Deyallor and Dakath eventually tore themselves away from there eternal conflict to deal with the threat to their creations. The tide quickly turned, and the giants were defeated at the Battle of the Skyfield in the Highsong Mountains, which had been a stronghold of the giants since the beginning of the war. The battlefield stretched an almost impossibly long distance across the mountains, making it likely the largest battle by area in the history of the world. Deyallor killed Unterana in single combat near the highest point of the mountains, creating an unusual formation known as the Divine Corpse — though this origin is disputed, with some believing that they simply fought upon the preexisting formation.
After the war, giants retreated to the edges of the world. The remaining dragons gave up on war, becoming almost entirely solitary creatures except for a few who formed The Circle of the Heavens and The Order of Dakath, with the goal of leading the humans who were at this point starting to become incredibly numerous. The death of Unterana was the last known death of a god, and likely the only to ever occur on the material plane.
