The Dragon War

The Dragon War was an ancient conflict between metallic and chromatic dragons that took place starting roughly 13,000 years ago after their creation by the gods Deyallor and Dakath. Created in massive numbers, the dragons fought across the world and in planes beyond until there number had wittled to a tiny fraction. Eventually, the rise of the giants caused them to band together to oppose them, starting what became known as The War of the Titans.   The twin gods Deyallor and Dakath had once been a single god, Bailuk, who was created by Gorrattam with two minds. Inside Bailuk, the minds did nothing but fight, leaving Bailuk unable to function until Gorrattam cut him in two, severing the minds. The result was two gods, Deyallor and Dakath, resembling identical gray dragons discernable only by a scar along different sides of their bodies where they had been severed. Already hating each other from their time trapped inside Bailuk, the two began to fight, never stopping for long since. During their first break from physical combat, Deyallor created the metallic dragons and Dakath the chromatic, so as to have armies for their eternal war.   Little is known about the course of the war, most legends likely originating with the dragons themselves. It is said, however, that there were at the start enough dragons to cover the skies. The number decreased rapidly as they fought across the surface and skies of the world. The battle also did untold damage to the worlds other residents, leaving what was left of the world much different than it had been before. After 5,000 years of fighting, the remaining dragons were forced to put off their conflict to fight off a challenge from the giants, their gods having become more distant. Most never rejoined the war, and though there is occasional conflict almost all dragons now live solitary lives.
