Zurea

The island continent of Zurea lies far removed from any other landmass, save for a few nearby islands and atolls. It is a refuge for the Psuedo-DNA based life native to the planet, relatively untouched by humans. As such, the ecosystem is somewhat alien in contrast with the rest of Novus.

Geography

Zurea is nearly large enough to be considered a continent, and has varying conditions dependent on location. The terrain is rough and undeveloped, overgrown with thick jungle vegetation. Human settlement to this day is limited to the northwestern coast, closest to Maerik.

Ecosystem

Life on Zurea is nearly all Psuedo-DNA based, the last bastion of native organisms displaced by the introduction of DNA based life by humans.

Ecosystem Cycles

Zurea experiences only mild changes between seasons, and generally remains hot and wet.

Climate

A hot and humid landmass, Zurea is uncomfortable to humans at best. Native life has adapted and thrives throughout, unchallenged by DNA based life.

Fauna & Flora

Native Psuedo-DNA based life makes itself home on Zurea. Green plant analogues cover the land almost completely. Some of these plants reverse the food chain, preying upon what animals they can. Slow moving but deadly Viper-trees shift among the jungle, capable of paralyzing prey with a toxic barbed limb. Capable of eating humans but not digesting them, victims are often regurgitated half-digested. Large arthropod-like creatures occupy the top of Zurea's food pyramid. These Stalk Fiends, as humans call them, can grow to lengths in excess of 10m.

History

First officially discovered by wayward seafarers in the 9th century NE, reports came back to Maerik of a new and alien land to explore and colonize. The infamous first expedition to Zurea was met with disaster. The island was declared off-limits for travel, and it wasn't until a century later that Zurea was successfully settled by more technologically advanced humans.
