Midari Helas
I must choose between my blood and my family? An impossible decision and yet I have to choose. The gods are cruel—damn them!
Ash and Snow
Midari is a young lord in a land where his people know only Slavery and anguish. Adopted at a very young age, he was brought up by Lord Baelon Helas as his son in Daeruin, not yet learning the truth of his origins or who his true family is. Despite growing up and being raised as the son of a Dark Elven noble, the common folk and nobility of Daeruin would never accept him as one of their own. To protect him, Lord Helas kept Midari confined to his estate for the majority of his youth. Only during the recent war between the Snow Elves and the Dark Elves has the young lord been permitted to leave the confines of his gilded cage. Many young lords and ladies of the empire take up steel and spell in the war to defend their homeland, to earn glory for their house and titles for their dynasty. Midari is no different in this respect. He fights not only to represent his father's house but to defend the only family he's ever known. Though the Snow Elven invaders claim to fight for the freedom of every Snow Elf, they often see him as a traitor, blood kin so far removed from his homeland that he has forgotten who he is. So far, too compliant for the Snow Elves, and too sympathetic for the Dark Elves - the young lord has no community to call home. The next chapter of the torn warrior's story is yet to be written.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Midari is rather petite and slender. As someone with significant training in swordsmanship and dexterity, he is in good shape, filled with vim, youth, and vigor.
Facial Features
Midari's elven features are apparent in his high cheekbones and sharp jaw. His eyes are round, soft, and purple.
Mental characteristics
Intellectual Characteristics
He can be somewhat naive, trusting in people's capacity for good rather than their self-interest more often than not. This has gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion. His inherently trusting nature causes him to quickly recruit and forgive allies, even when they greatly overstep the bounds of Daeruinic hierarchical expectations in how they treat him. While not dull, he isn't very analytical either, preferring to judge situations based on his intuitive sense for people. In other words, he is more swayed by matters of the heart, rather than the mind.
Morality & Philosophy
Midari believes in the virtues of nobility, chivalry, and universal kindness. While he seems to accept the hierarchical nature of Daeruin, the difference between slaves and free folk, and the reality of his station in life, he manifests these realities with kindness and mercy. He treats the servants of his family well, does not presume to humiliate those below him in rank, and gently deals with others. He has a strong sense of justice but often lacks the forcefulness to enforce it with vigor. Midari believes that everyone is deserving of kindness, respect, and dignity, even his worst enemies. Despite the mistreatment he has received at the hands of his own sister, Valara, he has consistently regarded her as family, to no avail. Many of his virtues he inherited from his father's tutelage.
Relationships
History
The discord between Valara and Midari began from the literal moment the latter stepped into the home of the former. Valara was never able to get over the violent death of her brother Athanas Helas and saw Midari not as a new brother to love like any of her family, but as an attempt at replacement. Her vengeful tendencies have often been targeted at him. His presence in the home only intensified her hatred for Snow Elves, having already blamed them for the lynching of her mother and brother. On a personal level, Valara and Midari have rarely had even decent relations. While Midari tries to treat Valara as his sister, more often than not, he gets cold indifference at best. The two have clashed, sometimes physically, and over the years, Valara has developed a distinct jealousy towards her father's kind treatment of Midari.
Nicknames & Petnames
Valara has been known to refer to Midari as her bargain brother or her father's 'pet snow rat'. Needless to say, they have no positive nicknames for each other.
