Gulade

Gulade is a small farming hamlet on the western boarder of Cafril. It boasts a very tight knit community that is often wary of outsiders. It tends to be less interested in outside politics and keeps to its own as much as possible.

Demographics

Primarily a human settlement with small percentage of halflings, elves, and dwarves also calling it home. The different races view all the others as equals and without bias. Any form of racial degradation is extremely rare to non-existent. The locals are more prone to being cautious of outsiders than a neighbor that carries different looks and traits. Majority of the community are farmers and agricultural workers with several wealthier yet modest business owners.

Government

The community elects a local to preside as mayor, but most decisions are voted on as a whole. Involvement by all members of the community is highly encouraged when choosing how to allocate funds and set local laws and tax reform. Farms within the area allocate twenty-five percent of their harvest to community stores for distribution during the winter and other times of hardship and drought. Business owners and locals are taxed accordingly to fund local development and repair of homes, buildings, and roads. Most laws are of a morally good basis and the violation of these is tried over by a tribunal of five townsfolk selected at random from the community.

Industry & Trade

Gulade is primarily an agricultural community. Excess grain crops and some livestock are the primary export, mostly being shipped to larger townships in the interior of the country. Other minor exports include furs and hides harvested from the local wildlife and livestock. The prime imports include ale, lumber, and metal ores to produce and repair equipment for the agricultural industry.

Assets

The community maintains a grain store that can feed its inhabitants for roughly eighty days without the supplement of any other food. This can sustain the community through hard winters and seasons of drought if need be.

There is a small store of weaponry including spears, bows, and arrows that can arm a militia of around six townsfolk if the need were to arise.

History

Gulade started as a handful of settlers and homesteaders being granted the opportunity to settle and develop the land for agriculture following the War of Six Kings with a neighboring nation to the west, Wyndam. The town slowly began to culminate into what it is today after more families followed after to find new lives in what was an exciting frontier on the edge of Cafril.

Architecture

The modest homes of Gulade are constructed from timber imported from the interior of the country. Wheat and corn stalks supply the thatching for most of the roofs. Several buildings like The Cheap Lord Pub and other businesses are made of wood and stone construction. The grain supply is housed in cylindrical stone structures with clay mud and pitch to seal the cracks and keep out moisture.

Geography

The town sits in low lying plain. A small creek flows to the north of town and Canning Lake to the southwest provide fresh water for irrigation and other uses. Larger plateaus can be seen in the distance to the south and southeast of the village.

Climate

The basin experiences temperate weather with warm summers and mild winters. Occasional heat waves and winter storms do occur once or twice a season. Wind is quite prevalent and there is rarely a calm day throughout all the year. The late summer experiences several weeks of hail storms, sometimes accompanied by tornado producing storms. These are the most detrimental events for the small farming community, as they have the potential to decimate crops.

Natural Resources

Most farms produce grain crops, such as wheat, corn, and barley. Some potatoes and beans are also produced by some of the operations in the area. Cattle and sheep provide the folks with meat and hides. There is a small quarry to the west on a hilltop with white slate stones unique to the area.
