This is the continuation of Session 451 - The Crater.
A massive earthquake has hit the Barony of Sarkum, and the powerful Crab-Titan Obsidapor has been brought back to life. This huge Ivashu event caused chaos and was blamed for recent earthquakes, tsunamis, and the destruction of Korri Cathedral, along with several coastal settlements. The heroes have been tasked with confronting this threat.
To add to the heroes’ troubles, months earlier, they destroyed a coven of witches and hags that had been terrorizing the kingdom’s border settlement (refer to Session 416 – Sanctimonious Preachers). One of the Hags escaped and swore revenge.
Location: Sarkum Castle in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – Sent by a God
The heroes are summoned to meet Sir Ranald Milaka, the Earl of Sarkum, and a mysterious tribal warrior. The heroes identify the man as one of the Adaenum barbarians, and it is evident from his tattoos that he is probably from one of the coastal tribes on the nearby Anfla Island. Earl Ranald introduces him as Kurok, the Olna (a chief and shaman) who has traveled to the civilized world for help. Kuroc tells the party that a giant crab monster, which matches the description of the titanic Ivashu Obsidapor, has been attacking his kinsmen’s villages. The destruction is widespread, with hundreds killed, and the monster relishes destroying the tribe’s sacred shrines dedicated to their primary god, Manaclir. According to legend, Manaclir himself killed Obsidapor long ago, and now Abaddon wields his spear. The warrior, during a divine ritual, communed with the gods and saw a vision of Manaclir. The god of storms appeared and instructed him to seek help among the civilized people on the mainland. The Earl’s lands have also endured Obsidapor’s wrath, and he is eager to offer assistance and protection. Odin believes Earl Ranald is sincere in wanting to help the islanders and defeat Obsidapor, but he also knows Sir Ranald has a long-term plan to incorporate Anafa Island into his domain. He prefers to do this peacefully, though he has not ruled out using force. Any help the heroes give would only support his long-term objectives.
The heroes agree to help, and the Earl provides transportation to the Earl’s outpost on Anfla Island, Fort Xuaka.
Location: On the water between Anfla Island and Kanday, near the Deadwood Reef.
Part 2 – A Near Miss
The party travels on the Earl’s ship, the Nivac, heading toward Fort Xuaka. Remy, lounging in the crow’s nest, spots the Dangerous Deadwood Reef growing dangerously close. The captain is steering the Nivac straight toward the reef and possible destruction.
He shouts a warning and summons gusts of wind to fill the vessel’s sails and steer away from the reef while Odin rushes to the wheel and struggles to control the rudder. The captain laughs maniacally, but Odin pushes him back with his shield, and Abaddon subdues him.
Part 3 – The Witch’s Revenge
Uncertain about the cause of this chaos, the suspicious party begins searching for threats. Odin notices movement near the bow, and Edelina’s True Sight reveals something invisible. The familiar blue-skinned witch, the evil Hag who caused so much trouble months ago, swore revenge on the party. Without hesitation, the heroes attack. The Hag points at Odin, and a purple beam strikes him in the chest. The Hag tries to turn the brave knight into a frog, but he is made of tougher stuff and resists, only slightly hindered and feeling nauseous. However, Odin is torn apart by her claws and vicious bites, and only Edelina’s magical Healing keeps him conscious. Out of the sea, half a dozen deformed octopi crawl onto the deck, causing chaos. These little monsters are covered in nasty venom that causes intense pain. Fortunately, Abaddon’s Fear spell makes them shake, and one flees the skirmish while the other are exposed as they quiver. The battle continues, and Odin’s enchanted sword seriously wounds the Hag. With a cackle and a threat, she backs off and Teleports away to cause trouble another day. Eventually, the evil octopi are driven off the boat, though Remy conjures a tornado blast and sends one flying a great distance away fun.
Part 4 – Nightmares
The ship’s captain finally regains consciousness. It seems he has come to his senses; however, Odin refuses to let him continue piloting the ship. He explains how, over the past few nights, he has been having nightmares involving a beautiful woman at sea. The heroes believe the poor man was possessed or controlled by the Hag and was not responsible for his actions.
To be continued.
