Vega Nask'an

The Little Fuhal

Vega Nask'an is an Apprentice to her mother, J'han, who is the fuhal of their village. She is one of two surviving children of her family and was engaged to a carpenter and carver named Alud. She has never truly left her hometown of Medan, though she has visited bigger towns and cities in @Microsha. Due to her filial pressures, she's never allowed herself to hope or dream of anything beyond life as a fuhal, probably taking over for her mother once she grows too old to continue the work. She is quiet and obedient, and she often struggles with her faith. While she understands she must be a pillar to hold up the community, she doesn't believe in @Arbitors who hear their prayers or in the words she says to make others feel better. However, she performs her duties admirably, even when she takes that duty to a logical extreme.   Vega has always been an excellent nurse and surgeon, having had her first experience at the age of nine. Her ability to quickly react and make judgment calls has saved many people in her village, as well as her careful attention to emotional distress during the vital first moments before emergency attention is given. Similarly, she is a gifted healer. Her study of remedies and cures was something that gave her time to herself, and thus Vega's knowledge of herbs and natural chemicals is vast.   She is mostly driven by her sense of duty and justice, even to her own detriment. Though she may be a sad, depressed girl, she has a bite when she needs it. She is unafraid to take action if she is needed and may put herself in grave danger in order to save someone else's life.

Mental Trauma

  • When Vega was nine, her little brother Joseph was attacked by something in the Deep Dark. The family who found him brought him to the fuhal with his stomach slashed open and his arm barely still attached. This was Vega's first time seeing such horrific gore, and it was her job to help her mother save him. After hours and hours of surgery, Vega was assigned to sit up next to Joseph for when he woke. When he did, the boy screamed about something black in his arm. Vega could See something unnatural creeping up from his hand. J'han was asleep, exhausted from the surgery, and Vega made the call to take the bone saw and cut off the arm they had just reattached. Though Joseph died several months later, the family has speculated that if Vega hadn't made that call, Joseph would have died much sooner.
  • At the age of ten, Vega lost her best friend, Y'sen, while playing too close to the Deep Dark. A monster (described as a large ball of arms with eyes or mouths at the palms) grabbed Y'sen and dragged her away. Vega tried her best to pull her friend away, but ultimately failed and ran. The only thing they found of Y'sen was her right foot. This was horrific for Vega, but in addition, she was forced to lie to Y'sen's father in order to get him to attend the funeral ceremony. That lie as haunted Vega every day.

Wealth & Financial state

Much like fuhals, Apprentices usually do not make money from their services. Fuhals and Apprentices are meant to be paid in charity, and often are simply taken care of by the community. A farmer may offer to supply eggs and vegetables on a regular basis, but after a counseling session may also bring meat as a gesture of goodwill. A carpenter may fix a roof, just as a plumber may fix a pipe; all these charitable acts give fuhals and Apprentices a comfortable life, but it is not a rich lifestyle. Poorer villages like Medan often have larger yards for their fuhals, who keep large gardens of herbs and vegetables in order to keep stocked. This is the same with Vege, though she had some money when she was engaged to Alud (who was paid in money).
