Thomas II of Vilia
King Thomas David James Delea
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Thomas was born in the year 2871 AT, during the reign of his paternal grandfather, King James II of Vilia, and named in honour of his great-grandfather King Thomas I; his grandfather; and his father, Prince David.
His father predeceased him in 2901, after an extended battle with a severe respiratory infection that spread throughout his body. King James caught the same illness, but recovered, and ultimately died from a preexisting heart defect in 2907.
Failures & Embarrassments
In 2908, shortly into the beginning of his reign, he sentenced to death a nobleman who challenged him on the revocation of a law passed under James II which favoured the patrician class. This sudden leap to draconian punishment was uncharacteristic of his later reign, and those who knew Thomas in his youth wrote that he may have been motivated by fear of disunity in the realm.
On the day the sentence was to be carried out, Thomas chose to forgive the noble his slight on the condition he surrender his title and retire from public life, to which he agreed. To stand down from the appointed sentence was also atypical for the king, and Thomas later called these two occurrences "the worst choice I ever made, and its worst solution."
Intellectual Characteristics
His time away from the throne is unabashedly spent in the depths of the royal library; Thomas is among the most scholarly of kings to reign in the Midlands in known history. He has a terrible habit of monologuing when inspired to speak, a trait he is aware of and for which he regularly apologizes.
Morality & Philosophy
His reputation is one of a judicial, albeit unyielding ruler; he will rarely compromise on a decision once it has been made, and very rarely will he revise a law once passed under his watch. Such laws as are passed, however, are widely regarded as tolerant and fair, and Thomas II is not considered a tyrannical king. In private quarters, his is a gentle soul, and while he is inflexible on the throne, he is not so by nature.
Personality Characteristics
Savvies & Ineptitudes
His most intense fascination is the topic of alchemy, and he makes regular correspondence with the Order of the Grandmasters in regards to new developments in alchemical procedures. He is more of a theorist than a practitioner; royal obligations afford him little time for proper experiments. Still, the king is a gifted alchemist, and his prowess on the battlefield has been demonstrated beyond doubt.
