The Loom
"And the jinn soared high into the sky on their magical threads..."In the Era of Satisfaction, the jinn lived in the great city known as The Loom, a massive network of interconnected threads through which was woven the tales of their lives.
Construction
The Loom was constructed on 196 warp cords, each twined from the threads of the first jinn of the 196 great jinn houses. These became known as the Foundation Cords. Each Foundation Cord is one meter in diameter, and the centers of each cord is one mile away from the next. The Foundation Cords were set in perfect parallel, and stretch off to points unknown. To build into the The Loom, a new square loom is made between two of the Foundation Cords of whatever thread is desired, of 196 cords. These cords are known as Structure Cords, and the new loom is entitled a plot. These initial plots are often only suitable for large infrastructure, whereas smaller constructions require further subdividing the plots into smaller plots with smaller looms made of more Structure Cords. All buildings in the Loom are built on some level of plot, as none are vast enough to spread across a whole section of the Foundation Cords.Buildings
Originally, buildings were all constructed on plots built into the plane of the Foundation Cords. These buildings, along with all of the cords making up the Loom, were made of the yarn of one or multiple jinn. Jinn had the ability to create an endless amount of thread of any weight from their tails and fingers. A building would be built along structure codes designed to prevent the building from falling into itself or out into the public domain. Any licensed jinn could threadcraft a structure along these safety codes, from any yarn that was wished. Some made their buildings out of their own threads, some out of the threads of famous individuals, and some with more fallible yarn bought generic threads off the market for their buildings. The type of threadcraft often affected the shape of the buildings. Woven walls were most common for simple houses and storebuildings, which caused them to have a very small base that they then shot up from in a spire that didn't stray much from its original base shape. Craftsbuildings, with the exception of threadsmithies, tended to be knit strucre, which allowed them to modulate width often, causing them to have beautiful curving shapes as they went up. This lesser restriction on the rigidity to a single profile also caused these buildings to be less tall than the spires. For important buildings, fancy houses, and public infrastructure, the most appraised of threadcraft was used: crochet. This was a technique that involved masterful control over every inch of the construction. Crocheters could spend years carefully sculpting their structures, with each bend and corner being precisely measured to fit a purpose. The end products were elegant works of art that took even the master jinns' breaths away to gaze upon. When a pair of jinn wedded, they would build their home on a new plot, with the warp made of Structure Cords connected to the homes of their two families. These houses caused the Loom to start to balloon skyward, transforming the plateau city into a growing grid network that scraped the sky. By the end of the era, the Loom had become a thriving network, with threads crossing the various levels to interconnect the whole city together.
History
The Loom was built above the birthplace of the jinn. As the newly made people learned to use their threads, they looked down upon their old fortress and abandoned the ideals of the Saviorship. They wound their cords together and sent them out across the world, then lifted their new home high into the sky so that they would never have to be bound to the ground again. The area directly above the fortress where Jinnine drew her final breaths became the very center of the Loom, which later grew into the governmental buildings of the city.Travel
To travel across the Loom, the jinn had two methods. The first was flight, through the careful construction of wings from a jinn's threads, however, it proved to only be useful for large open areas, such as over the sculpture parks. In most cases, the jinn traveled by cord, forming a sturdy loop out of their tail threads and closing it around the structure cords linking the many buildings of the Loom together. This article is a part of Llagnyn Era 5: The Era of Satisfaction
