As a child, Kaneki faced relentless bullying due to his small size and blonde hair. He wanted to emulate his father, who was born with whitish-gray hair, but this only made him a frequent target for teasing. One day, after returning home bloodied with broken teeth and a black eye, his father gave him a pivotal piece of advice: "You gotta fight back." This moment marked the start of Kaneki’s transformation. His father introduced him to boxing and martial arts, where Kaneki learned to defend himself.
At first, Kaneki disliked the idea of fighting. But as time passed, he began to enjoy it. The thrill of facing opponents, the intense focus required in each battle, and the challenge of physical combat became addictive to him. His passion for martial arts grew rapidly, and soon, he couldn’t imagine a life without it. He found peace and strength in the ring, where he could push his limits and face adversity head-on. Kaneki’s desire to become stronger led him to join a clan, primarily to pay rent and seek out fighters who could challenge him.
The Hidora clan was notorious for having some of the best fighters around, which appealed to his relentless pursuit of strength. It was Harashi Shimizu, a former rival who had beaten him senseless many times in the past, who invited Kaneki to join. Despite their previous encounters, Shimizu’s invitation was one Kaneki couldn’t refuse. The challenge was what he had been looking for all along.
