NMR G2 Class

The North Midland Railway G2 Class was a class of twenty three 0-4-2WT lococotives built between 1863 and 1865 for commuter services. They were designed by James Price for use on the fast suburban services of the day.
The class were designed to have high speeds, high acceleration and high tractive efort to run on commuter trains on the midland main line and the suburban services between cities. They were mostly allocated to Hardwick St. Peters and Wandon as these sites were in close proximity to two of the larger commuter hubs. Four class members were also fitted with condensing gear to allow them to run on the City Widened Line for use on parcels services, these modifications were later removed when more powerful locomotives took over the CWL traffic.   The G2s were gradually replaced on suburban traffic from 1887, being completely replaced when the 7Bs arrived. Branchline traffic for them dwindled soon after, being replaced by C14s. Some class members were sold into industry, surviving slightly longer, all were scrapped by 1922.
