Scriptwroughts

Spellcasters of the Royal Dwarven Military

Scrolls and tomes cover tables and counters, Mages shifting between them, consulting pages and texts centuries old. While the logistics of the battles and wars are sorted among the halls of a different academy, the knowledge held here will change the course of what they face, as long as those who use this magic can harm those who are against them while healing those who are with them. The number of Dwarves consulting the library of magic is the smallest in the Royal Dwarven Military, but they are by far the best trained in their field, ready to provide everything that the colors of magic can give.   The Scriptwroughts are the corps of the Royal Dwarven Military that specializes in all things spellcasting, including healing, religious duties, animals, and special forces. The men and women who choose to attend the First Furnace did not always join the Royal Dwarven Military, but necessity drove many to become part of the Scriptwroughts, serving as experts of all things magical. Not all who attend the First Furnace, the magic academy of the Dwarven Kingdom, will seek out this type of service to the kingdom. Still, those who do are rewarded with honor and respect from all in the Royal Dwarven Military, as well as access to knowledge from the earliest days of the kingdom.   While the First Furnace was the first of the academies to be created, the Scriptwroughts were the second of the corps established in the Royal Dwarven Military, remaining the smallest throughout the years. Specializing in magic requires time and patience, but even the strongest of Mages cannot win the war alone. The Scriptwroughts must rely heavily on the Hammerfalls and Stoneshapers to enter battle and move through it, surviving in places where Mages often do not. During peacetime, these people fulfill various duties throughout the kingdom, many of which have nothing to do with the military and the roles they play during wartime.

Structure

The Scriptwroughts are considered the most specialized of the Royal Dwarven Military, as only Mages and those that utilize magic are part of this group. Unlike the Hammerfalls, only two divisions are designated within the Scriptwroughts. Still, both have a wide range of possible duties that then split into smaller specialized groups within the Cleric Corps and Special Forces.   Those who wish to join this corps are often told to focus on their studies, and upon completion of their chosen course of education, they can choose their specialty within the Scriptwroughts. As the First Furnace is often split into sets of coursework based upon color of magic, most students often have some idea of where in the Scriptwroughts they may be placed after graduation, but there is still some leeway in these placements. Some on-the-job training may be required for their specific job once they have been placed, but the majority of their knowledge is gained through studying their chosen color of magic.
Cleric Corps

Cleric Corps

The Cleric Corps is the division of the Scriptwroughts with the widest variety of duties. This division is highly specialized in all magic that deals with medicine, religious uses, and animals. In its earliest days, this division only specialized in colors of magic that could be used for healing or had ties to the divine, but after a reorganization of the Hammerfalls, the Cleric Corps also picked up groups that specialized in veterinary medicine and animal handling. This division brings in a wide variety of spellcasters, often those that would have specialized in Yellow or Purple Magic anyway. No matter the specialization, all members of the Cleric Corps are proficient in some level of healing magic as a point of necessity.   Cleric Corps members are the second group of the Scriptwroughts on the battlefield during large-scale combat, often only after Special Forces have done their forward reconnaissance and the Infantry and other divisions of the Hammerfalls have entered the fray. These men and women will establish infirmaries, temporary temples, and corrals behind safe lines to aid those who need it as the battle rages. Oftentimes, their
days during battle are the longest, especially during times of heavy casualties.   All divisions must take part in civil service during times of peace. This looks different for the Scriptwroughts, as time at the First Furnace granted them a profession outside of the military. Those in the Cleric Corps are often Clerics, Paladins, Acolytes, Tamers, and others that specialize in Yellow Magic or those that have been granted the use of Purple Magic.

Special Forces

Special Forces is the division of the Scriptwroughts that is the most specialized, but also covers the widest array of colors of magic. In most instances, this division specializes in offensive magic and forward reconnaissance, using the colors of magic to support secretive operations. Special Forces was also the first official division of the Scriptwroughts, although its organization and duties have changed greatly over the years due to a number of factors.   Various members of the Special Forces are the first group on the battlefield during large-scale combat, often before the Infantry, Cleric Corps, and other divisions of the Hammerfalls are deployed. These men and women often reach behind enemy lines to scope out information that could be paramount in battle for the survival of the greatest number of the force. This job takes a great deal of skill as these people must complete their duties without letting the enemy know they are there.
Special Forces
All divisions must take part in civil service during times of peace. Much like the Cleric Corps, Special Forces operatives will take up professions that align with their specialized color of magic, often becoming Mages, Evokers, Chronomancers, Alchemists, and more.

Leadership

For such a large military, leadership is paramount to success on and off the battlefield. This is not necessarily as true for the Scriptwroughts as their numbers are fairly small compared to the other corps.   Overall, the Scriptwroughts are led by the Headmaster of the First Furnace with Professors of various colors of magic leading small groups that utilize said color. The Headmaster is appointed by the Dwarven King and is often someone who has studied magic for many centuries. This person is also required to serve a number of years in the Royal Dwarven Military in order to take this position.   The rank hierarchy of this corps is tied heavily to the leadership of the First Furnace, with most Professors and other staff of the academy serving as part of the military. Not all staff are part of the military, but it is tied to their job description to help fulfill whatever duties that the First Furnace needs to accomplish in order for the Scriptwroughts to succeed.

Culture

The culture of the Scriptwroughts is very far removed from the military, as they are often separated from the other corps, and their duties are very different. These Mages often have normal peacetime professions that are both tied to the Scriptwroughts and not at the same time, giving them the ability to have a life outside of the regimented culture of the overall Royal Dwarven Military. This may vary among the divisions of the Scriptwroughts, especially among the Special Forces, which are even further removed from normal military culture.   The worship and study of the teachings of Crommel is something all divisions participate in, even outside of the Cleric Corps. One day throughout the week is often dedicated to this study, with various groups of the Scriptwroughts selecting different days so as not to take their small force out of activation on a single day. Even during wartime, daily prayers are common, led either by one of the Cleric Corps.

Assets

Dwarven Law dictates that items must be stockpiled at the various academies throughout the Dwarven Kingdom for use by the corps of the Royal Dwarven Military. These goods, for the most part, are under the purview of the Combat Services divisions of the Hammerfalls, but some items, especially those for specific spells, are strictly regulated by the Scriptwroughts. Specific units of the Combat Services division are designated to the academies to inventory, care for, and distribute the various items that are kept in stores across the Kingdom, but two additional members from the Scriptwroughts are assigned to the assets stored at the First Furnace.

Military Education

The oldest of the academies in the Dwarven Kingdom, the First Furnace has the most established curriculum that covers centuries of magic, theory, and history. Very little has changed in its teachings over the lifetime of the academy, but the appearance of The Spectrum of Magic caused the academy to realign its curriculum to match the established colors of magic. Students often specialize in a single color of magic, but some are able to specialize in two colors that are similar.   Students are required to fully complete a course of study following their color of magic and entering a profession before they are able to join the Scriptwroughts. A small entrance exam is required for casters wishing to join the Scriptwroughts, but few who have completed a full course of study are unable to pass.

History

While the date of the formation of the Royal Dwarven Military is unknown, the Scriptwroughts were the second of the corps to be formed, even though the First Furnace was the first academy to be established. As other magic academies were established across the world, the Dwarves saw the possibility for magic to be used in warfare and created the Scriptwroughts to be the militaristic part of the First Furnace.   In times of peace, those who trained at the First Furnace and eventually joined the Scriptwroughts had necessary skills for use in society. When the Hammerfalls were formed, it was decided that all divisions of the Royal Dwarven Military would be required to have some form of civil service above and beyond their military service in times of peace. This was when the requirement to complete a full curriculum and join a profession was established as part of the Scriptwroughts. This would allow them to have established careers in peacetime that were beneficial during wartime, as the Scriptwroughts were a bit removed from normal military life.   Since the formation of the Scriptwroughts, it has remained the smallest and most specialized of the corps. The Special Forces were established first, hosting a handful of smaller groups that specialized in the various colors of magic. As the need for healers increased, the Cleric Corps was established specifically as users of Yellow and Purple Magic.

The Scriptwroughts are such a cool section of the dwarven military. I always love the idea of dwarven mages because so many fantasy worlds don't let them use magic at all.
