Logistics is at the heart of all warfare. While knowing how to fight is part of it all, an army cannot survive if not well-supplied. It is with this thought in mind that these people train, learning the movements of every division, which supplies they may need on the front lines versus those that stay hidden. If an item is a need, it will pass through the hands of these people, trained as they were to move everything from place to place, feeding those that fight the hardest, and keeping morale and cleanliness at their pinnacle in the process. Without those who study a little bit of everything, nothing truly works or moves without this division of the
Hammerfalls touching each part of the process.
The Quartermaster Corps is one of the Combat Services divisions of the
Hammerfalls specializing in the development, production, acquisition, and sustainment of general supply. The men and women who choose to attend the
Golden Anvil and eventually join the Quartermaster Corps are considered the most widely knowledgeable, often known as jacks of all trades. So many different knowledge bases must pour into the logistics of creating and moving supplies across battlefields and through tunnels.
Master Dwarves,
Cooks,
Blacksmiths, and more make up one of the most varied divisions in all of the
Royal Dwarven Military.
While
Infantry and
Field Artillery were the first divisions of the
Hammerfalls to form, the Quartermaster Corps and the other Combat Services divisions were not far behind. Those who fought on the front lines could not succeed without others who supplied them from the back, moving goods from their homeland, often hundreds if not thousands of miles away. Because of this need, the Quartermaster Corps also became the catch-all division, taking on jobs that did not fit elsewhere within the
Hammerfalls. Even in times of peace, these people fulfill similar roles, helping move goods through the tunnels of the
Dwarven Kingdom.
While the Quartermaster Corps specializes in supply, it does become a catch-all for the
Hammerfalls in terms of anything that does fit elsewhere within the Combat Arms, Combat Support, or Combat Services divisions. Supply, culinary, delivery, combustibles, mortuary services, and more fall under the banner of the Quartermaster Corps. Some specialties that once were part of the Quartermaster Corps have even been given to other divisions.
Those who wish to join these divisions will have to announce their intention to join a Combat Services specialty early on in their schooling at the
Golden Anvil. Pathways are established at the
Golden Anvil to help people specialize in one of the combat divisions, but trainees will not fully choose their division and individual specialty until much later in their careers. Those in the Quartermaster Corps are often the last to specialize as a wider knowledge is required to work in the various specialties of this division.
Supply
Supply is the main objective of the Quartermaster Corps and is often what most people associate with the division. The men and women that work as part of Supply are craftsmen and logisticians, specializing in the creation of goods necessary for all parts of the
Royal Dwarven Military and their eventual delivery. Most people in the Quartermaster Corps are part of this specialty due to the wide variety of goods that are produced and taken care of.
Most
Master Dwarves that serve in the military fall under this division and specialty as they use their trade to provide high-quality goods that can withstand either the test of time or battle. While most of this specialty works behind the scenes creating and sorting goods, some do work with
Transportation and other parts of the Quartermaster Corps to deliver and move goods. It is this area where Supply and Delivery intersect, allowing people to move between the specialties as needed.
Culinary
As the Quartermaster Corps is in charge of all supplies for the
Royal Dwarven Military, cooking also falls under their charge.
Cooks are a beloved profession among the
Dwarves as food and drink are a very important part of their culture. Those who specialize in the culinary arts are tasked with the cooking and delivery of hearty meals to the frontlines during wartime but are also known for their cooking expertise across a wide variety of cuisines, even those that are not from the
Dwarven Kingdom.
The
Dwarves being the largest exporters of cast iron goods take great pride in the utensils and meals they can create under difficult circumstances. Outside of wartimes, those who specialize in the culinary arts hold competitions to expand their techniques and keep their skills sharp so that they may sustain an entire army if they are called to. A large area of the
Golden Anvil has been dedicated in modern times to a large-scale kitchen that is used as a training ground but also a working cafeteria to feed the academy and many others throughout the
Sapphire City.
Delivery
Delivery is considered to be part of the Quartermaster Corps as it pertains to supply, but this specialty also works very closely with
Transportation. People who choose this specialty are often trained in both areas, sometimes falling under the banner of the Quartermaster Corps or
Transportation depending on the mission and their role in it. Many make the delineation that if magic is used to move goods, it falls under the Quartermaster Corps but if it uses physical means, then it falls under
Transportation.
This specialty takes on a wide variety of jobs, from coordinating deliveries to various areas, mapping supply lines, moving components between the various manufacturing stages, and many other things. This group also aids specifically with the aerial delivery of goods if a battle or military movement would occur outside of the
Dwarven tunnels. In this instance, the Quartermaster Corps would cooperate with the
Scriptwroughts or other external groups to make such a delivery of goods happen.
Water
Water is a necessity of life, from cooking, drinking, to washing clothes and other goods. An entire section of the Quartermaster Corps specializing in the delivery of water to wherever it is needed, whether through the use of mule teams and specially designed wagons, pipelines created by the
Corps of Engineers, or through semi-magically means. This group also deals with sanitation during wartime and the plumbing of cities and villages during peacetime.
Along with the delivery of water to where it is needed, this group specializes in the delivery of alcohol as an integral part of the
Dwarven diet. Various ales and other stronger alcohols are brewed by many throughout the
Dwarven Kingdom and then purchased by the Quartermaster Corps in order to supply the
Royal Dwarven Military. Some
Master Dwarves are employed by the Quartermaster Corps to brew a handful of unique ales that are beneficial to
Soldiers during wartime.
Combustibles
Those who specialize in Combustibles are in charge of the supply of any goods of a volatile nature. This includes
gunpowder, many of the special metals, dynamite, and other goods that may be needed by the
Corps of Engineers and the
Stoneshapers to create tunnels, excavate areas, or bring down key points in the fulfillment of their duties. Combustibles specialists are also considered to be chemists as they can create combustible goods on the fly if given the correct materials.
This specialty does not have peacetime duties as many of the others do, but many that work with combustibles serve as
Master Dwarves,
Blacksmiths, and other craftsmen that deal with many of the same materials that they would work with as part of the Quartermaster Corps. They may also spend time learning from other races about the various combustible materials that may be used during wartime. Learning from those in the
Human Empire has been a part of this group for many years.
Mortuary
One of the truths of war is the inevitability of death. Those who choose to specialize in Mortuary Services are seen as godsends, chosen by
Crommel himself to be the purveyors of last rights and bringers of his chosen children home to the fold. Much like many aspects of the
Cleric Corps, being part of Mortuary Services is not for the faint of heart. It is a profession surrounded by death, one that requires them to mark down deaths and casualties on battlefields and attempt to bring those who paid the ultimate price back to their homeland.
Those who find themselves in Mortuary Services have similar jobs during peacetime, often working in places that deal with funerals, last rights ceremonies, and other celebrations of life. Many of them began their careers as part of the
Cleric Corps and chose to return to their schooling and attend the
Golden Anvil to learn about the proper ways to fulfill this new duty.
Field Services
Field Services is the broadest specialty of the Quartermaster Corps as it encompasses many wartime and frontline necessities that do not fit under any other specialty. Many of the important duties taken care of by Field Services deal with cleanliness, of both
Soldiers, their camp, and anything they may use. Without a certain level of cleanliness, disease can run rampant during wartime. Morale can also be affected if
Soldiers are forced to work in desolate or dirty conditions.
During peacetime, these people fulfill a variety of domestic duties, but many of them serve as logisticians for various parts of
Dwarven society. Many who join Field Services may have injuries or disabilities that keep them from joining other areas of the
Royal Dwarven Military, but they still wish to serve and fulfill a purpose for their kingdom. Others who have reached retirement age but still wish to serve may also join this specialty. Because of this, short courses are held at the
Golden Anvil to help people transition into this specialty.

Iconography
The symbol of the
Hammerfalls is an axe with wooden posts banded about the haft. This weapon was chosen as it symbolizes the role that the
Hammerfalls fulfill in the
Royal Dwarven Military and to the
Dwarven Kingdom. The axe is meant to be the military as a whole or the
Dwarven king while the posts symbolize the different divisions of the
Hammerfalls that have joined together in order to provide a wall of safety for the other corps of the military or for the king. Each division receives a set of different colored posts and bands to mark them as different but yet still part of the whole.
The Quartermaster Corps bears a symbol of purple posts and white bands. Purple is the color of royalty, a color to denote the riches that the division is in charge of as they oversee all supplies within the
Royal Dwarven Military. The white bands that hold the posts are meant to denote simplicity, a motto that the Quartermaster Corps must live by in order to fulfill their duties to the best of their abilities.
Military Education
While the youngest of the academies in the
Dwarven Kingdom, the
Golden Anvil is by far the most diversified in its curriculum. While the
School of Mines and the
First Furnace specialize in engineering and magic respectively, the
Golden Anvil became the catch-all academy for everything military-related. In its early days, the academy strictly specialized in the art of war, weaponry, and strategy, but as times changed and the
Royal Dwarven Military grew, it became necessary to expand the offerings so that all necessary parts of the military could be covered under this education.
Specialized paths are built into the curriculum at the
Golden Anvil to give all students a robust knowledge of everything about war and the military but also allow them to specialize in a given area that would prepare them for joining one of the many divisions of the
Hammerfalls. Early on, students will choose the path of Combat Arms, Combat Support, or Combat Services. After a couple of decades of overall education in a given area, the students will specialize in one of the seven divisions.
Those who will eventually end up in the Quartermaster Corps after choosing Combat Services as a specialty receive probably the most varied of all educations in the
Royal Dwarven Military. These people must understand many facets of military movements in order to supply the various divisions effectively. This division is also known as the catch-all of divisions, meaning that areas of expertise that do not fit under other divisions often fall under the Quartermaster Corps.
Leadership
For such a large military, leadership is paramount to success on and off the battlefield. This is equally true for the Hammerfalls which is the largest corp of the
Royal Dwarven Military and is structured into the largest number of divisions.
Overall, the Hammerfalls are led by a battle-tested
General who has served many centuries in the
Royal Dwarven Military. A handful of other ranked officers serve beneath this
General and run the daily operations of the Hammerfalls, including things like recruitment, pay, and other over-arching issues. Beneath this, each of the divisions has its own leadership structure.
A
General leads the various divisions and then a series of ranked officers as the division breaks into smaller and smaller units, each with a similar command structure and duty. At the smallest scale, a unit will consist of twenty
Soldiers led by a lower-ranked officer specializing in one specific thing within their division.
Assets
Dwarven Law dictates that items must be stockpiled at the various academies throughout the
Dwarven Kingdom for use by the corps of the
Royal Dwarven Military. Still, these goods are under the purview of the Combat Services divisions, including
Ordnance,
Quartermaster, and
Transportation. Specific units of each division are designated to the academies to inventory, care for, and distribute the various items that are kept in stores across the
Kingdom.
I really love the variety of disciplines in this corps, especially that it includes mortuary services and water (alcohol). Really fascinating article. Probably the corps I would want to join if I had to be in the military. XD
